After a year off, this weekend marked the return of the Western Area International Open for 2026.

The weekend started on Saturday with Carrie and Tyla being on Table Official duties. They had the opportunity to see old friends and meet lots of new people from other areas as well as some lovely Dutch and Irish referees who made the long days easier with a lot of laughing ๐Ÿฅฐ
They were also thrilled with their lovely new Western Area ties ๐Ÿคญ

On Sunday the Table Official duties continued but Tyla also had to squeeze in coaching our 2 boys, Alfie and Dieter (Massive thanks to the top table for making it work ๐Ÿ˜Š) The boys were entered in their own category of Cadet but as it was on the same day they both decided to give Juniors a go too.

Dieter gave a really good performance in his first fight but pulled his groin and sadly lost from a Wazari that was changed to an Ippon just has he was about to put a hold down on the other player. In his second fight he almost got an armlock on a higher grade but wasnt close enough due to his previous injury being too painful. Because of that injury he couldnโ€™t compete in the Juniors category.

In his Cadet category Alfie was part of a large pool which is pretty standard with the u66s and gave a good effort in his first fight, with the clock ticking down and a Wazari each the other player scored a yuko with seconds to go.
In juniors Alfie was in a pool of 16 with everyone a lot older than him and all brown and black belts. His first fight was with a black belt that isnโ€™t just a judo player but is also a bjj player. Alfie gave him a really good fight and almost caught him a few times but sadly Alfie lost to a huge Ippon throw. His second fight was against another black belt which, again, he gave a really good fight but unfortunately lost to a failed throw into a choke.

It was a really lovely weekend and we hope to take a bigger team next year ๐Ÿฅฐ
