Posting this blog as a reminder to all those that didn’t get the GCSE results they were hoping for today…

Who you are and what you achieve at school does not necessarily reflect what you CAN and WILL do once you enter the world of work.

Don’t lose heart. Seek out an environment that suits you and supports you to grow without having to change who you are.

We explore how neurodivergent children labelled as naughty in school often reveal their unique talents when they find the right workplace.

Did you know...? Employment is one of the strongest protective factors against reoffending.

A stable job can provide:
- financial independence
- structure and routine
- positive social connections
- increased confidence
- opportunities to develop new skills

While employment alone isn't the answer, it plays a significant role in helping people build a more stable future.

Through Connect to Work, Genius Within works alongside employers and participants in East Sussex to help create sustainable employment opportunities that benefit everyone involved. We're here to help employers navigate inclusive recruitment, make informed decisions, and access talented candidates they might otherwise overlook.

If you'd like to find out more about becoming a Connect to Work employer, we'd love to hear from you.

"Yeah, but, we're all a little bit autistic..."

Are we? 🤔

Hear from 2 of our own autism assessors, Charlie Eckton and Emily Morris.

Social media can be a useful place to recognise experiences and find language for things you have noticed about yourself. But diagnosis is more complex than matching yourself to a list of characteristics.

At the same time, neurodivergence can sometimes be harder to recognise when similar traits run through a family. What feels “normal” at home may actually be a clue.

As the saying in this conversation goes: “You can’t see a zebra in a pack of zebras.” 🦓

Recognition can be an important first step. Diagnosis requires expertise, context, and careful application of the diagnostic criteria.

At Genius Within we are all reeling from the tragic death of Professor Jason Arday. We do not want this post to be an opportunity to further treat this kind and brilliant man as a topic for “debate” so comments will be turned off.

When asked what he would do to change the world, Professor Jason Arday famously replied, “I would take a thread and a needle and I’d interweave love into our society.” An outpouring of love is therefore a fitting tribute and so we hope those who feel able will join us this evening at the vigil for Jason in Trafalgar Square.

If you are seeking other ways to show support to his family, or demand accountability for the cruelty we have all witnessed, then here are some options:

GoFundMe fundraiser for Professor Ardays family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-memory-of-dr-jason-atta-kwei-arday

Demand a public enquiry into press conduct: https://goodlawproject.org/petition/jason-arday-letter/

Jason was a bright star in the neurodiversity community and we know his legacy will outlive this current dark moment. We first met him when he attended the Celebrating Neurodiversity Awards a few years ago and so had reached out to him in recent weeks to let him know that he had our unwavering support.

Tragically, we fell short as a community to safeguard Jason, but there are many more people in the ripple affected by this travesty, and so for us, this makes it more important that we do not let this moment pass without meaningful action, lasting solidarity, and a renewed commitment to challenging the racism, ableism and cruelty that too often go unchecked.

A coaching breakthrough! 👇

In this video, our coaches share a powerful example of how coaching can help someone move from feeling stuck and uncertain to achieving a goal they once thought was out of reach.

Through coaching, individuals are given the space to reflect, explore what is and is not working, and identify strategies that align with how they learn, think, and work best. Sometimes, those conversations can lead to significant moments of clarity and confidence.

Recruiting fairly doesn't mean ignoring risk. It means managing it with confidence.

In our recent poll, almost half of employers told us they'd like more guidance on managing risk when recruiting someone with experience of the criminal justice system.

So, we've put together five practical tips to help.
These tips cover:
✔️ Assessing each case individually
✔️ Understanding your legal responsibilities
✔️ Having open, respectful conversations
✔️ Carrying out balanced risk assessments
✔️ Focusing on skills and potential

Through our Connect to Work partnership with East Sussex County Council, Genius Within supports employers to recruit fairly and confidently, while helping people with experience of the criminal justice system move into sustainable employment.

By looking beyond someone's past and focusing on their potential, you could discover talented candidates your organisation might otherwise miss.

What do coaching strategies actually look like in practice?

In this video, our coaches share a real example of how coaching can help someone move from feeling overwhelmed and stuck to feeling more organised, focused, and in control of their workload.

One of the most common topics explored in coaching is organisation. But rather than jumping straight to solutions, coaches first work with clients to understand the root cause of the challenge and identify what is getting in the way.
