Does your first aid knowledge need a little refresh?

Most first aid certificates last for 3 years, during which time your first aid skills and knowledge will inevitably fade, potentially with serious consequences. As a result it is strongly recommended that you attend an annual update to refresh the emergency topics and receive any protocol updates.

My interactive, 2 hour virtual sessions are suitable for all sectors, as I cover both adult and paediatric protocols. There is always time to ask questions and I make it appropriate for whoever is on the call.

It demonstrates best practice and ensures your first aid knowledge is kept up to date, all from the comfort of your own home or workplace! Please note that attendance does not extend the validity of your existing qualification but does count for CPD hours (certificate provided).

Course content:
🔹️Incident management
🔹️Unconscious casualties
🔹️The safe airway position
🔹️Choking
🔹️CPR
🔹️Defibrillator use

Cost: £25 (2 people are welcome to share a screen)

To book: visit https://worsleytraining.co.uk/book-a-course/ and scroll down to your chosen date.

Previous feedback: “Really useful refresher training course. It was my first experience of an online first aid training course but Louise created a relaxed and welcoming learning environment and delivered the content in an engaging way, where you felt able to ask any questions. Thank you!” Becky, Google review

As always, please do ask if you have any queries.

I regularly get asked whether someone should buy a LifeVac.

They are suction-based devices to help someone who is choking and if you aren't aware of what I am talking about, then picture a fancy sink plunger and you will get the idea!

The Resus Council used to be a hard No, but they have recently updated their website, which now states:

"RCUK makes no recommendation for or against the use of suction-based airway clearance devices whilst awaiting the findings of an updated ILCOR systematic review."

For more details see https://www.resus.org.uk/about-us/news-and-events/rcuks-position-use-suction-based-airway-clearance-devices-choking-individuals

So the bottom line is that we still can't recommend that you buy one, but if you do succumb to the adverts, please remember that:

● they are not being marketed to replace back slaps and abdominal thrusts, but as an additional tool to try if the recommended techniques are not working / not possible.
● they can be used on an unconscious casualty

When I tried one on a choking manikin, it was tricky to operate by yourself, but with one person holding the mask tightly to make a seal on the face and another person operating the handle, then the simulated obstruction was cleared each time.

Further clinical research is being carried out to assess the potential benefits and harms of these devices, but I expect them to be approved by RCUK in the future. Especially as LifeVac's own website https://www.lifevac.uk/ states that 6821 lives have already been saved by their use.

There are many counterfeit versions also for sale so please never buy one of those - for more details see https://www.gov.uk/drug-device-alerts/counterfeits-and-unbranded-copies-of-lifevac-anti-choking-devices-may-fail-to-work-correctly-or-worsen-choking-incidents-if-used-dsi-slash-2024-slash-003

Have you been to the wonderful Honeystreet Mill Café & Farm Shop? Definitely one of our family favourites!

You are now in safe hands there, as 3 of their staff attended my public first aid course in Marlborough last week.

Lynn wrote me a lovely review on Google:

"Very informative and hands-on without being too scary and confusing. All done in plain English with no complicated terminology which was very helpful."

That's exactly how I want my training to be described 😊

A reminder for any local followers who are pregnant or who have a new baby or young child, to pop into the Marlborough Playhouse this Saturday, 10am-12 noon, to chat to myself and 5 other local experts.

The coffee and cakes are scrummy, your kids can play while you chat and there is no need to book. We have also all contributed to a gift hamper for one lucky recipient.

See you there!

"A teacher affects eternity; they can never tell where their influence stops." — Henry Brooks

It's 'World Teachers day' and my busy September included teaching the staff from 4 different schools:

- Paediatric FA at St Francis, Pewsey
- Paediatric FA at Chafyn Godolphin, Salisbury
- FA at Work at Dauntsey's, West Lavington
- Paediatric FA at Puddleducks PreSchool, Pewsey

As an ex-secondary geography teacher, I can fully understand the dedication, patience and resourcefulness required by teachers. It's really hard work!

I loved the actual teaching (and still do) but it was all the marking and paperwork which I found too tedious.

So thank you to all the teachers out there, especially those that have or do teach our kids!

Do you have any dispersible aspirin in your home?

World Heart Day is a good annual prompt to tell you about Heart Attacks, and strongly suggest you spend about 75p on some 300mg dispersible aspirin tablets, just in case.

Heart Attacks occur when there is a sudden blockage of the blood supply to the heart, usually caused by a clot from the build up of fatty deposits in the arteries.

Signs and Symptoms vary but may include:
🔹️Crushing central chest pain which can radiate up to their jaw, down their left arm or round to their back (25% are only minor or none at all, especially in women and elderly)
🔹️ Shortness of breath
🔹️ Feeling weak, dizzy or nauseous
🔹️ Face going grey and sweaty
🔹️ A 'sense of impending doom'

Always call 999 and while waiting for the paramedics, sit them down in the W position, so leaning back against a wall with their knees bent up, and give them 300mg dispersible aspirin to chew to slow the clotting process.

"Adapting to your Client's Needs"

I was teaching at Stowell Farms near Pewsey last week, and many of the participants deal with dangerous machinery (and cows) daily.

Therefore we booked in a Catastrophic bleeding session for next week, but 2 participants also regularly use chainsaws around the estate and asked specifically for the +F (Forestry) add on.

As well as Catastrophic bleeds, the +F session also includes:
• Emergency planning and remote medical assistance
• Crush injuries
• Effects of extreme cold
• Lyme disease

Having grown up on a farm and worked in the outdoor industry for many years, these are all topics that I am comfortable to teach, and do so on the REC Level 2 Outdoor first aid course.

Therefore I spoke to Nuco Training and asked what I needed to do to, in order to be able to certificate the +F session, and having checked my knowledge and experience, I am happy to say I am now a +F instructor / assessor, and will be teaching it back at Stowell Farms next week!

Have you dropped off your child at university for the first time this week? Or a residential 6th form FE college?

If so, please tell them to go to a high street pharmacy for a free Meningitis B vaccine, so we can avoid another outbreak, like the one in Kent earlier this year.

A million young people are expected to be eligible, so this needs sharing.

Students in their first year of university have a risk that is about seven times higher than that of young people of a similar age who do not go to university, because of increased mixing of social groups and shared accommodation.

All the details of who is eligible and how to find a clinic are in this article -
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgmyggpg42o

Also, I hope they are having a fantastic time at Uni / college, assuming you have heard from them, and your house doesn't feel too quiet?!

The sun is shining here in Wiltshire but summer is sadly over. So this is your annual reminder to go and check your hot water bottle and those of elderly relatives, before you actually want to use it.

Did you know that hot water bottles should be replaced after a maximum of 3 years as the rubber degrades, so they may burst and cause nasty burns?

If you are planning to use one this winter, then please have a look to see how old it is.

It should have a daisy wheel symbol on it giving the year of manufacture, so these were 2022. Then the number of petals that have dots in them give the month, so these were September. Then finally the number of dots in the last petal give the week, so this has 1 dot showing the first week.

Therefore these went in the bin last year. If it doesn't have a daisy symbol then it should definitely be binned!

The Marlborough Playhouse is a wonderful addition to the town.

So when Sarah from The Hummingbird invited me to share my Paediatric first aid knowledge at a Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond event there, it was a resounding yes!

I'm looking forward to being surrounding by other local small businesses, including The Doula Gem and Kat Venus Yoga, and answering any first aid related questions.

So if you are within reach of Marlborough, are pregnant or have small children, then do pop in to see us on Saturday 10th October 10am - 12 noon. The coffee is really good and there is plenty to keep your kids entertained!!
