🍂 Hello September! 🍂

There’s something about September that always feels like a fresh start in Early Years. 💛

We’re kicking off the month with three days of Holiday Club before getting Little Castle ready to welcome all our nursery families back next week.

We’re so looking forward to seeing familiar little faces again, welcoming our new children and families, and starting another year of playing, learning, exploring and making memories together. 🏰

We’re incredibly grateful that Little Castle is almost full for the year ahead, with just two spaces remaining for 2026/27.

And looking a little further ahead, we’re already taking bookings for September 2027, with some sessions beginning to fill.

So here’s to a happy September, a fresh new nursery year and all the adventures ahead. 💛

Has your child ever burst into tears the moment they saw you at nursery pick-up? ❤️

It can be really upsetting — especially if you’ve spent the whole day wondering how they’re getting on.

But those tears don’t automatically mean they’ve had a bad day.

Think about how much a first day at nursery asks of a little person.

New people. New routines. New sounds. New expectations. New experiences.

They may have spent the day playing, laughing, exploring and beginning to build a relationship with their key person.

Then you walk through the door.

Their safe person is back. ❤️

And sometimes that’s when all of those emotions they’ve been carrying finally come out.

So if you’re greeted with tears at pick-up, try not to immediately think:

“They’ve hated every minute.”

Sometimes those tears are simply the release that comes when they see the person they feel safest with.

And remember — starting nursery is a big adjustment for both of you.

Give yourselves time. ❤️

Save this for their first day at nursery or a childminder — or send it to a parent who might need this reassurance.

Holiday club starts again next week… which means it’s time to reclaim the playroom 😂

Over the holidays it somehow becomes the place where EVERYTHING gets dumped 🙈

So today’s job:
🧺 Move the washing
📦 Clear out all the random stuff
🧹 Dust and hoover
🧸 Put everything back where it belongs
✨ Set it all up ready for the children

There’s something very satisfying about watching it slowly turn back into a playroom again!

Now I just need to see how long it stays this tidy once holiday club actually starts… 😂

Well… I asked what I’d forgotten and you certainly reminded me 😂

Some of your comments unlocked memories I hadn’t thought about in YEARS.

Stencilled display lettering. Handwritten daily diaries. Every Child Matters. Mary Sheridan. Face-to-face training…

And then someone casually mentioned needing a CHEST X-RAY to register as a childminder! 😳😂

Reading all your comments has reminded me just how much early years has changed.

And of course, not everything about the old days was better.

Some changes have made children and practitioners safer and moved our profession forward enormously.

But there’s one thing that keeps coming through in your comments that I think many of us genuinely DO miss:

Feeling supported. ❤️

LA advisers who knew you and your setting.

Regular supportive visits.

Face-to-face training.

Meeting other practitioners.

Being able to pick up the phone and ask someone for help.

Maybe that’s the real nostalgia underneath all of this.

So here’s my question:

What do you think early years has LOST that would genuinely be worth bringing back?

Not because everything was better back then…

but because some things really were worth keeping. ❤️
