Don’t worry — there are still ways to enjoy it safely! Take a look at this short clip for a few simple alternative ways to view the eclipse **without looking directly at the Sun.** 👀✨

The UK will experience a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday 12 August.

The extent of the Sun’s coverage and the timing of maximum obscuration will differ across the country. Local weather conditions may impact viewing opportunities, so it’s worth checking the forecast in advance 🌦️

Northeast Scotland will have around 88% covered just before 7pm, whilst in the far southwest of England there will be around 96% coverage just after 7:15pm.

Never look directly at the sun; use a pinhole projector or certified eclipse glasses to view it.

Happy Birthday to my greatest inspiration... my wonderful Mum. ❤️🎂

Long before Gemma Venn Tutoring ever existed, there was an incredible teacher who unknowingly inspired it all. ✨

It was Mum who first encouraged me to become a teacher, following in her footsteps. Looking back, I will always treasure the years I spent working alongside her in the classroom, from the age of 8 right through until I qualified at 22. Watching her teach with such warmth, patience, humour and effortless expertise taught me lessons that no university lecture ever could.

Growing up, my generation wasn't taught formal English grammar in the way children are today. While I picked up some of the foundations through studying French, German, Spanish and Latin, it was by listening to Mum's teaching and then working with her pupils during their independent and group activities that everything truly clicked.

I chose to spend countless INSET days and school holidays in her classroom because there was simply nowhere I'd rather be. She and her Head teachers generously gave me endless opportunities to step in and teach long before I was qualified, trusting me with pupils while quietly guiding and encouraging me every step of the way. Those experiences gave me confidence, invaluable lifelong skills and a love of teaching that has never left me. Looking back now, I realise just how much of the teacher I am today was shaped by one truly exceptional educator - Mum!

She inspired generations of children throughout her career and I feel incredibly fortunate that I got to witness that every step of the way. So much of the teacher I am today is because of her unwavering encouragement, wisdom and example.

Happy Birthday, Mum. Thank you for inspiring me, believing in me and showing me what truly outstanding teaching looks like. Every child I've ever taught has, in a small way, benefited from everything you first taught me.

I wonder how many of my former pupils remember doing this on those extra-hot school days…? A little tray of cool water under the table for feet and suddenly the classroom felt a bit more manageable. ☀️💦

And who remembers the days when *hot play* was a thing - when outside was actually hotter than inside, so breaktime became cooler, calmer indoor play instead!?

There was more to these moments than simply keeping cool. There were life skills too: emptying the trays before and after, washing them out, filling with just enough water to cover their feet but not so much that it splashed across their classmates or flooded the classroom floor on the journey back to their seat.🪑

And then there was working out the capacity of a school drawer and discovering how full we could make them before the water spilled over the sides… and before the temperature had risen and we needed a top-up! The maths skills involved were incredible: measuring, estimating, comparing, problem-solving and applying learning without even realising it.

Sometimes the smallest moments teach the biggest lessons: independence, responsibility, hand-eye coordination, consideration for others… and create the memories that stay with children long after they leave our classrooms.

Making memories, keeping cool, adapting and learning without even realising it 💛.
