Oooooooooo... Yes, it's me Petersfield's Spectral Librarian and I have risen from my cosy grave to share some spooooooky insights about a particular book by our author of the month.

May I present you with, The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson.

Upon setting foot in Hill House our leading lady, Eleanor Vance, immediately feels the suffocating eeriness enveloping the very confines of this grand dwelling. What could possibly be the source? Is it bound in the tragic origins of its construction, is it the lingering spirits of long dead residents or is it that the very foundations Hill House is built on that are cursed! However, what worries Eleanor even more is how Hill House influencing her thoughts and temptations...

This story demonstrates Shirley Jackson's utilisation of subtle instances of fear along with a mastery of diving into the unravelling psychology of its main character, perfectly showing that there is more to what someone seems from our initial assumptions.

We hope you come and visit Petersfield Library; you may just find a story that was waiting patiently just for you...

'Edie Burchill and her mother have never been close but, when a long-lost letter arrives with the return address of Milderhurst Castle, Kent, Edie begins to suspect that her mother’s emotional distance masks an old secret.

Evacuated from London as a thirteen-year-old girl, Edie’s mother was chosen by the mysterious Juniper Blythe and taken to live at Milderhurst Castle with the Blythe family.

Fifty years later, Edie, too, is drawn to Milderhurst and the eccentric Sisters Blythe. Old ladies now, the three still live together as the twins nurse Juniper, whose abandonment by her fiancé in 1941 plunged her into madness.

Inside the decaying castle, Edie begins to unravel her mother’s past. But there are other secrets hidden in the stones of Milderhurst Castle, and Edie is about to learn more than she expected. The truth of what happened in the distant hours has been waiting a long time to be uncovered . . .'

October is Black History Month, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is the figurehead of contemporary Black authors. She is widely recognised as a central figure in postcolonial feminist literature.

Immerse yourself in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Dream Count, a soul-stirring masterpiece that left me breathless. This isn't just a novel – it's a mirror reflecting the raw, beautiful complexity of Black women's lives.
