I had a lovely day away from the desk yesterday and used the National Trust day pass that I won to visit Winkworth Arboretum. If you’re local and haven’t visited before, it’s well worth it. It was a really relaxing day ☺️

📚 A little behind-the-scenes milestone today…

Today was a pretty big day in my dyslexia specialist tutor training as I recorded a lesson as part of the evidence for my course.

I'm getting close to the end now — something that has felt a long way off at times! 😂

There's still a little way to go, but I'm really enjoying being able to put everything I've been learning into practice and seeing how much my understanding has developed along the way.

For now, I'm quietly celebrating a little milestone and feeling very grateful to the learners who have allowed me to put my learning into practice. ❤️

Nearly there! 🎓

☀️ Friday thoughts… and I am MELTING! 🫠

Well, it's been another busy week of tutoring, but I have to admit that my motivation is rapidly disappearing in this heat! 😂

This week I've:

📚 Kept the tutoring sessions going
🏡 Finally got around to a few of those jobs at home that I've been saying, "I'll do that in the summer holidays," since Christmas!
☕ Managed to catch up with friends
🎉 Celebrated some VERY good news on Thursday when my son got his results!

And I've also been quietly working away on something new behind the scenes…

👀 Something is coming soon…

I've been meaning to get this particular project finished for a while, and I'm hoping that telling you it's coming will give me the accountability I need to actually get it done next week! 😂

More on that very soon…

For now, I'm off to find the coolest room in the house and sit very still. 🫠☀️

Have a lovely weekend! ❤️

✏️ From planning to first draft...

On Monday, one of my learners started writing her first draft of a set of instructions for making a wrappuccino!

We started this piece of work in our previous session by looking at a range of instructional texts and thinking about what makes instructions clear and effective. We then planned her own ideas.

This week, she was ready to turn that plan into her first draft.

I love seeing how much easier writing can become when children have had the opportunity to look at examples, talk through their ideas and plan before they start writing.

And this one has a very practical ending too... she's going to have a go at making her wrappuccino at home! 😊

I can't wait to see how the finished instructions turn out — and, more importantly, whether the wrappuccino tastes as good as it sounds!

My car is being serviced, so rather than sit around waiting, I've brought my laptop to the library and got some admin done.

But, of course, I couldn't leave without having a little browse… 👀

And look what I found!

🐹 A guinea pig book for a child who is planning a piece of writing from the viewpoint of a guinea pig writing to their owner.

📖 A new thriller for me — because every working day needs a little reward!

💰 And the absolute bargain of the day… a 30p copy of Egg Drop! One of my favourite books to use when I was teaching because it has SO many curriculum links. I lost my copy when I left the classroom, so finding this for 30p felt like fate! 😂

Not a bad morning's work! 📚☕️

Could 1:1 tuition be the right fit for your home-ed child?

One of my lovely home-educating parents recently left this review after her son worked with me for over two years.

This is exactly what I aim for in my sessions: personalised learning, a calm environment and a teacher who gets to know the child behind the learning.

I have a small number of daytime spaces available for September, with sessions available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. These are suitable for home-educated children looking for individual support with English and/or maths.

If you'd like to chat about whether a session could be a good fit for your child, send me a message.

It's been wonderful to welcome children back this week.

This week I've worked with some familiar faces, welcomed four new learners, and packed our sessions full of practical, confidence-building activities.

Every child learns differently, which is why I love adapting each session to suit the individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

A huge thank you to all the families who continue to trust me with their children's learning. It's a privilege to watch them grow in confidence week after week. ❤️

I have just two daytime sessions available next week:

📅 Monday 10th August – 10.00am
📅 Thursday 13th August – 10.00am

📩 If you'd like to find out more, just send me a message.

Have a wonderful weekend! ☀️

Every walk is the same... 😂🐾

Poppy will ignore every sensible stick and somehow find the biggest one she possibly can.

She'll then proudly carry it all the way home, convinced she can do it... and, more often than not, she does.

It made me smile because it reminded me of so many of the children I work with.

Sometimes they look at a piece of work and think, "That's far too big. I can't do that."

But with the right support, encouragement and someone believing in them, those "impossible" challenges become completely manageable.

We don't have to avoid the big sticks. Sometimes we just need someone to help us figure out how to carry them (although I think Poppy has it covered 😂)

If you're looking for a little extra support with your child's learning this summer or from September, feel free to send me a message.
