The Three Gorges Dam,Hubei Province, China is a classic example of a project with a profound dual legacy.
On one hand, it is an undeniable feat of engineering that achieves its primary goals: it generates a massive amount of clean(er) electricity and has likely prevented major downstream flooding. It has also improved river navigation.
On the other hand, it came at an enormous and potentially irreversible cost. The environmental degradation, social displacement, and cultural loss have been staggering.
The dam remains a powerful symbol of China's economic rise and its ability to execute colossal infrastructure projects, but it also serves as a stark warning about the complex and often devastating trade-offs involved in taming nature on such a grand scale.
