Homework doesn’t have to become a battle. 💚

Five things that can help:

• Break tasks into smaller steps
• Allow movement breaks
• Use technology to help
• Reduce unnecessary copying
• Focus on effort and strategy rather than speed

The aim isn’t to make learning easier by removing challenge. It’s to remove unnecessary barriers so a child can show what they know.

If you’ve been wondering whether dyslexia might be part of the picture — for your child, teenager or for yourself — Defining Dyslexia is here to help make things a little clearer.

I’m Mark, a specialist dyslexia teacher and assessor. I work with children from age 8, young people and adults, and the aim is always the same: to understand the whole person, not just produce a test score.

Defining Dyslexia offers diagnostic dyslexia assessments, both in person and remotely, alongside support with exam access arrangements, university and DSA evidence, study skills and workplace support. I can also explore traits associated with ADHD, dyspraxia and dyscalculia as part of the wider picture.

For families and schools, there is also SEN consultancy, APDR and EHCP support, training and SENCo support — plus a growing collection of completely free guides and practical resources.

In-person work covers Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Peterborough, Stamford, Rutland and South Lincolnshire, with remote support available UK-wide.

Not sure what you need? You don’t need to work that out before getting in touch. I’m always happy to have an initial conversation.

And one for later in the year: I run an annual free SpLD assessment competition. Details of the 2026 competition will be announced in November, so follow the page if you’d like to see the information when it’s released.

New term. Same struggles? 🍂

A new school year can bring familiar difficulties back into focus. Reading taking longer than expected. Spelling that doesn’t seem to stick. Written work not reflecting what a child can explain verbally. Homework becoming exhausting.

One difficulty on its own doesn’t mean somebody is dyslexic. But when difficulties persist, it can be worth looking at the pattern rather than simply asking them to try harder.

Our new website is live! 🎉

We’ve redesigned the Defining Dyslexia website with one main aim: to make it genuinely useful.

Alongside information about dyslexia assessments and the support we offer, there is now an expanded Knowledge Centre with practical information for children, young people, adults, parents and professionals.

You’ll also find lots of free resources, guides and tools that you can use whether or not you ever book an assessment with us.

We’ll keep adding to it too. If there is something you would find useful that we haven’t covered yet, please let us know.

Have a look around and we hope you find something that helps. 💚

💭 How long have you been talking yourself out of it?

“Maybe it’s just a phase.”
“They’re doing fine… mostly.”
“I’ve managed this long.”
“I wouldn’t even know where to start.”

Whether you’re wondering about your child or yourself, it is incredibly easy to find reasons not to explore dyslexia.

But sometimes that quiet feeling has been there for a reason.

Perhaps your child is doing okay at school, but you can see how much effort it takes to keep up.

Perhaps you’ve spent years developing ways around reading, spelling or writing difficulties and thought, “Well, I’ve managed.”

And you have.

But managing and understanding aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Exploring dyslexia doesn’t mean committing to an assessment. It doesn’t mean deciding there is definitely a problem either.

It can simply mean finding out a little more. 💚

That’s why I’ve created two completely free dyslexia indicator quizzes:

👧 Children aged 7–15 — around 2 minutes
🧑 Adults — just 19 questions
📋 Instant results
💷 Completely free
🚫 No diagnosis and no pressure

And if you would rather speak to someone, you can book a free 15-minute discovery call with me. We can talk about what you have noticed and whether exploring things further would actually be worthwhile.

Sometimes having a name for something doesn’t change anything about who you are.

It just helps explain why some things have always felt harder than they should.

💭 Sometimes, as a parent, you just know something isn’t quite adding up.

Maybe homework takes far longer than it should.

📚 Reading has never quite clicked.
✏️ Spelling is learnt one day and seemingly gone the next.
⏰ Schoolwork takes huge amounts of effort.
💬 Or perhaps you’ve heard “they’re bright, but…” more times than you can count.

None of these things automatically mean dyslexia. However, when you know your child is capable of more than they are able to show, it is understandable to wonder whether something else could be going on.

That’s why I created our FREE children’s dyslexia indicator quiz, designed for parents of children aged 7–15.

It takes around 2 minutes and gives you instant results. There are no labels and it isn’t a diagnosis. Instead, it is a simple first step to help you make sense of what you have been noticing.

🧩 And what happens afterwards?

Nothing, unless you want it to.

If the results suggest there may be indicators worth exploring, you can read more through our Knowledge Centre or book a free 15-minute discovery call with me.

As a specialist dyslexia assessor, I’ll happily talk through what you’ve noticed and give you straightforward advice about whether a full assessment is likely to be worthwhile.

💚 Trust your gut. Exploring doesn’t mean diagnosing. It simply means finding out more.

🧠 Dyslexia doesn’t disappear when you grow up. Sometimes, you just get better at hiding it.

Many adults reach their 30s, 40s, 50s or beyond without ever considering dyslexia.

You might be good at your job. You might have qualifications. You might have developed clever ways of working around the things you find difficult.

But perhaps some things have always felt harder than they should.

📖 Reading takes more effort than it seems to for other people.

✍️ Spelling has never quite become automatic.

📧 Emails, forms and reports take much longer than you think they should.

🗣️ You lose track during long conversations or meetings.

📝 Multi-step instructions disappear unless you write them down.

🔢 You mix up dates, numbers or left and right, even when you know them.

😴 A day of reading or desk work can leave you mentally drained.

And yet, you have coped.

You have found workarounds. You avoid the things that expose the difficulty. You have probably become very good at hiding it.

One or two of these things occasionally? Probably nothing.

Several of them, going back years? It might be worth a proper look.

🔎 Not sure whether it sounds like you?

☀️ Summer Availability Update ☀️

The summer holidays can be an ideal time to arrange a dyslexia assessment. Without the pressures of school, many children feel more relaxed, and there is time for reports and recommendations to be in place before the new academic year begins.

I now have limited appointments remaining over the summer, with a small number of assessment slots still available.

If you’ve been wondering whether your child might have dyslexia, or you’ve been considering arranging an assessment before September, now is a good time to get in touch.

📍 Home assessments across South Yorkshire, Peterborough, Stamford, Rutland and surrounding areas.

💻 Remote assessments available across the UK.

If you’re unsure whether an assessment is the right next step, I’m always happy to have an informal chat first.

📚 Does homework end in tears?

If your child has dyslexia, homework can take much longer than expected. It is not because they are lazy or not trying hard enough.

Many children with dyslexia are working twice as hard just to:
• remember instructions
• organise their ideas
• read the task
• write their answers
• stay focused until the end

A few simple changes at home can make homework less stressful for everyone.

We've created a FREE downloadable guide packed with practical tips that parents can start using straight away.

One price. Everything included.

When you’re looking for a dyslexia assessment, it can be difficult to compare services.

Some providers charge extra for the report. Others charge for follow-up support, recommendations or additional meetings.

I’ve always wanted to do things differently.

When you book an assessment with Defining Dyslexia, the price includes everything you need.

✔ A comprehensive specialist assessment
✔ A detailed, easy-to-understand report
✔ Personalised recommendations tailored to you or your child
✔ Post-assessment support if you have questions afterwards
✔ A report that meets the standards required by schools, universities and employers
✔ The choice of a face-to-face or remote assessment, with exactly the same high-quality service

No hidden costs.

No unexpected extras.

Just a thorough assessment that helps you understand why difficulties are happening and, more importantly, what to do next.

I believe clarity shouldn’t come with surprise fees.

If you’d like to know more about what’s included or which assessment is right for you, feel free to get in touch.
