There’s something interesting about being a beginner.⭐️

You can’t rely entirely on what you already know. You have to pay attention, make mistakes, notice what happens and adjust.

And learning doesn’t stop being relevant when childhood ends.👀

So this week’s challenge isn’t another puzzle.

Try something genuinely unfamiliar: a new dance step, a few words in another language, a different piece of technology, a craft, a recipe, or a skill someone else can teach you.📊

The objective isn’t mastery.

It’s giving yourself another opportunity to learn and adapt.

Much of everyday life depends on routines and skills we’ve already developed. That’s useful. Our brains don’t need to approach every familiar task as though we’re doing it for the first time.

But being busy isn’t necessarily the same as encountering something cognitively challenging.

Something unfamiliar may require us to pay closer attention, discover patterns, tolerate uncertainty or change strategy.

So rather than only asking, “Have I kept myself busy today?”, another interesting question might be:

When did I last ask myself to learn something I didn’t already know how to do?

Recently, I tried doing some cognitive activities with my mother, and the experience made me reflect on something I don’t think we talk about enough.

What caught my attention wasn’t whether she answered correctly. It was the process: understanding something unfamiliar, finding a strategy and changing approach when necessary.

I don’t want to draw conclusions about ageing from one personal experience. But it reminded me that cognitive development isn’t only a conversation about children.

Our thinking changes throughout life, and our capacity to learn doesn’t simply disappear because we get older.

Perhaps cognitive wellbeing deserves our attention throughout the whole lifespan.

When something doesn’t work, our first instinct can be to repeat the same strategy with more effort.👀

But sometimes progress requires something different: noticing that the strategy itself needs to change.
That ability to pause, reconsider and explore another approach is part of mental flexibility.
One small question can create that pause:

What else could I try?🧠

I’m pleased to share a new opportunity that brings together an important part of my work.🤍

I’ll be featured in the Cambridge Federation of WIs Yearbook 2026–27, where I’ll be introducing my work around cognitive wellbeing and the development of interactive workshops for groups.

The workshops explore something I find endlessly interesting: not simply whether we can complete a task, but how we think, adapt, remember, notice and respond when our first strategy doesn’t work.

A space for curiosity, participation and practical exploration.
Would your group enjoy exploring how we think?🤔

We’re quick to turn a difficult moment into a conclusion about ourselves: “I have a bad memory.” 🧠

But performance can also depend on how we approach the information.
Grouping, association, visualisation and connecting new information with something already familiar can change the task considerably.

So before judging your memory, become curious about your strategy.
How do you usually help yourself remember something important?👀

Two identical scores can hide very different learning processes.🧠

The difference may become visible when support is introduced.
How much prompting is needed? Does the child change strategy? Can they use what they learned on the next task?

That is one reason dynamic assessment looks beyond the final result and observes learning in action.🤗

Getting stuck gives us information.👀

But so does what happens next.
Does one prompt unlock the task?
Does the child recognise the strategy and use it again?
Can they apply it somewhere new?🧠

Dynamic assessment looks closely at this response to support, rather than treating the first answer as the whole story.
