Fingerstyle Exercise 1 ~ DADGAD Tuning (Beginner Guitar Lesson) 🎸

Here in this lesson we learn and practice our first fingerstyle exercise technique.

We are using only the picking hand for this exercise and alternating between the ‘D’ and ‘A’ bass notes whilst simply ascending and descending on the open treble strings with the first, second and third fingers. We are in DADGAD guitar tuning.

🎸 Introduction to DADGAD Guitar Tuning ~

Here in this lesson we introduce the DADGAD guitar tuning. DADGAD is a wonderful altered tuning for playing traditional Celtic music as it creates a really lovely full sound on the guitar and emulates drones very easily.

In this first DADGAD lesson we look at tuning the guitar to DADGAD from Standard Tuning. And then also take a first look at the open drone notes and the effect they have on the guitar's resonance.

🍃 Meet Your Tutor ~ Wilson Noble

Hi my name is Wilson Noble I am a Scottish Musician and Guitarist based in Perthshire in Scotland, were I live with my beloved wife and Soul partner Suzie Eggins.

I have had a great love of music and guitar since childhood and have performed and taught in a diverse variety of musical settings for over 20 years. I love learning and teaching music and have studied at HNC, Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Masters level degree.

🍃 Qualifications:

MA Music and the Environment (2017 – 2019)
BA (Hons) Applied Music (2015 – 2017)
HNC Music (2013 – 2014)
LCM Grade 5 Music Theory (2004)

I founded Celtic Guitar Workshop with the desire to share my love, commitment, knowledge, skillset and experience in playing Traditional Celtic music on the guitar within a friendly, inviting and structured environment. A welcoming place were we can share and learn the all important foundations of our beautiful Traditional Celtic music on the guitar, together.

🍃 Background

Traditional music and culture was not something that was present in my childhood or upbringing, it is something that my Soul has called me to reclaim and integrate later in life. I have worked solid for the past ten years and more to learn, work with and integrate my Celtic heritage through music and culture. I didn’t know the true value of my own Celtic heritage and culture until I journeyed deep into it. And I know now that it is an intrinsic part of me that was simply missing for most of my life…

…I am deeply glad and intimately empowered to be recognising and re-membering this lost part of my being. And now I am in a position to share some of that love with you. This is what the Celtic Guitar Workshop at its Heart and Soul is all about!

“Traditional music for me is community music. It is music that was created by the people and for the people over centuries and millennia of time. So we could co-create and celebrate life, culture and evolution together as a people’s…”

D Major Trad Chords (10th Position) 🎸

‘In this lesson we learn some really great trad chords in D Major up the neck in 10th position. These are enjoyable to play warm sounding chords with great tone that add good variety in your accompaniment playing.

It is good to explore the same chords in different positions on the neck. Each chord voicing and position on the neck provides a different quality, texture and tone.’
