Join Professor Iain Stewart to discover how Jordan’s landscapes reveal an exceptional geoheritage, where geology, culture, and history are interwoven!

Best known his TV programmes such as Earth, How to Grow a Planet and Rise of the Continents, Iain will share how from desert oases to rift valleys, these environments record both Earth’s deep past and the long human story of adaptation. This talk presents geoheritage not simply as geotourism but rather as a holistic concept linking natural landscapes with cultural traditions, identity, socio-economic development and lived experience drawing on examples from the Azraq Oasis and the Aqaba Mountains.

At any time, Kati-Thanda/Lake Eyre is the most remarkable of geographical features in outback Australia. The sheer size of the lake is astounding to see in real life, and being a long way from anywhere, it’s quite an adventure to get there...

In our latest blog, the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia explain how Kati-Thanda/Lake Eyre is usually a vast, brilliant-white salt lake, but extraordinary rainfall across the Australian outback since 2025 has transformed it, approaching levels last seen in 1974.

We were delighted to present RSGS Honorary Fellowship to Jen Stout this week, for her work in bringing stories from the frontline of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Jen’s journalistic work has been covered in major outlets including BBC radio, London Review of Books, Prospect, and the Sunday Post. She has worked as a freelancer across Ukraine, in Kharkiv, Odesa, Kyiv, Kramatorsk, Kostiantynivka, and in a variety of frontline positions; from high schools, train carriages, and on 1,600-mile aid convoy journeys.

Through her reporting, Jen has highlighted a country defined not only by this conflict, but also by the resilience of its people, the richness of its history, and the depth of its culture.

Including geologist Iain Stewart who will be mapping Jordan's geoheritage; explorer David Hempleman-Adams reflecting on a lifetime of adventure; author Annie Strathie telling a history of polar exploration on 50 objects; author John Goodlad talking about how salt fish from Shetland became one of Europe’s staple foods, powered an economic boom, and inspired artists, writers and musicians; adventure cyclist Jude Kriwald sharing his remarkable journey cycling solo from England to India; and Pacific rower Miriam Payne sharing her story of becoming part of the first female team to row the Pacific non-stop and unsupported.

Terrible to hear about the avalanche on Broad Peak and that ten climbers, including Nirmal Purja, remain missing. Our thoughts are with the climbers and rescue teams as search efforts continue, and we hope for the safe return of all those still unaccounted for.

The avalanche occured in Pakistan's Broad Peak, one of the world's highest mountains.
