Forget the flowers for a moment…

If I had to choose just one Pelargonium to grow purely for its foliage, it would have to be ‘L’Elegante’.

An old ivy-leaved variety with the most distinctive variegated foliage, soft green leaves edged in creamy white, often taking on a pinkish tinge as the season changes.

Of course, it flowers too, but for me this is one of those Pelargoniums that really doesn’t need to. The foliage does all the work.

Beautiful spilling from a terracotta pot, over the edge of a container or somewhere you can appreciate those leaves up close.

I get asked quite a lot how I got into growing, so I thought I’d share a little of my story.

The truth is, I don’t remember a time when plants weren’t part of my life. I was born into a nursery, spent my childhood amongst glasshouses, and growing has always been second nature.

After many years running my family’s vegetable and herb nursery, Laura and I were given the opportunity to take on Fibrex. It felt like the perfect next chapter. Together, we’ve had the privilege of caring for one of the world’s largest collections of pelargoniums, preserving old favourites, introducing them to a new generation of gardeners, and ensuring these remarkable plants continue to thrive for years to come.

It’s a real privilege to spend every day doing what I love, alongside my wonderful wife. Every order, every visit to the nursery, and every message of support means more than you probably realise.

Whether you’ve been following us for years or have only just discovered Fibrex, thank you for being part of our journey. I look forward to sharing more from behind the scenes, passing on growing advice, and hopefully inspiring a few more people to discover just how special pelargoniums really are.

Good plants start with good compost.

One of the questions we’re asked most often is what compost we use for our pelargoniums.

Our recipe is simple:

🌱 70% loam-based compost (we use Petersfield Peat Free Supreme)
🪨 20% horticultural grit for excellent drainage
🤍 10% perlite to improve aeration and encourage healthy root growth

This creates a free-draining yet moisture-retentive mix that pelargoniums thrive in.

Quite often your mix from the Garden Centre will already contain a controlled mix fertiliser, this means there’s no need to start liquid feeding for around the first four weeks after potting on, giving the roots time to establish before you begin a regular feeding programme.

A good compost mix is one of the simplest ways to grow stronger, healthier pelargoniums.

Healthy roots make healthy plants, and it all starts with the compost. 🌱

Echinatum ‘Mrs Stapleton’ 🌸

Graceful, delicate and effortlessly elegant.

With its floating sprays of vivid pink flowers dancing above soft silver-green foliage, it’s easy to see why this species has captured the hearts of collectors. One of those pelargoniums that stops you in your tracks.

Sometimes the rarest plants are also the most beautiful.

Receiving a Royal Warrant of Appointment to His Majesty The King has been one of the proudest moments in Fibrex Nurseries’ history.

For a specialist nursery devoted entirely to pelargoniums, it is an extraordinary honour, recognising generations of dedication, craftsmanship and an unwavering commitment to growing exceptional plants.

It was therefore a particular pleasure to speak with The Telegraph following the announcement, reflecting on what this recognition means to us and discussing the remarkable revival of pelargoniums in British gardens.

As specialist growers, we have always believed these plants deserve far greater recognition than they have often received. Behind every variety lies a story of heritage, careful cultivation and horticultural expertise, and we were delighted to have the opportunity to share that passion with a national audience.

The Royal Warrant to His Majesty The King is a recognition we are immensely proud to carry forward. It reflects the standards that have defined Fibrex for generations and inspires us to continue preserving one of the world’s most significant collections of pelargoniums for future gardeners to enjoy.

Our sincere thanks to The Telegraph for helping to tell the story of these extraordinary plants, and to everyone who continues to support Fibrex. Your enthusiasm allows specialist growers like us to continue preserving, propagating and celebrating this remarkable genus.

Head to our Stories to find the link to the full Telegraph article. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed being part of it.

Reflections on RHS Badminton Flower Show 🌿

After months of planning, growing, propagating, painting, building and imagining, it’s hard to believe the Perfume Pavilion is now behind us.

What began as an idea became a place where thousands of visitors paused, slowed down and rediscovered the simple joy of fragrance in the garden. Watching people brush a scented pelargonium leaf for the first time, close their eyes and smile is something we’ll remember for a long time.

This project was a true collaboration, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life. Thank you to 𝐍 𝐈 𝐂 𝐇 𝐎 𝐋 𝐒 𝐎 𝐍 𝐒 for designing such a thoughtful and beautiful garden, Juliana Greenhouses UK for providing the stunning glasshouses that framed the space so perfectly, and our fabulous friends at C.Atherleylondon for celebrating how plants continue their journey into natural fragrance.

For us at Fibrex, it was a privilege to showcase the remarkable world of scented pelargoniums, plants we’ve dedicated our lives to growing and preserving. To share their history, their fragrance and their stories with so many enthusiastic visitors made all the hard work worthwhile.

Finally, thank you to everyone who visited, asked questions, shared stories, rubbed a leaf and discovered a new favourite scent. Gardens have a wonderful way of bringing people together, and we’re so pleased we could be part of yours for a few days.

Until next time.

Hot weather doesn’t always mean more watering.

When temperatures rise, it’s easy to reach for the watering can every day, but pelargoniums are far happier if you resist the temptation.

Their roots need oxygen just as much as they need moisture. Constantly wet compost can lead to stressed roots, yellowing leaves and poor growth.

Instead:
🌿 Check the compost before watering.
🌿 Water thoroughly when it needs it, then allow the compost to dry slightly before watering again.
🌿 Early morning is the best time to water during hot spells.

A well-grown pelargonium is much tougher than many people realise. A little dryness between waterings is far better than constantly wet roots.

Have you been tempted to water every day in this heat? Let us know below.

This old nursery door has seen years of life at Fibrex. Rather than replacing it, we’re giving it a new purpose - becoming part of the story we’re telling this year.

We can’t wait to welcome you inside.
