Many people find homeschooling challenging, especially when living in rural areas with limited group activities. As someone who lives in rural Cornwall, I can attest that supporting and nurturing my children's social development is the hardest part of homeschooling, but it is incredibly rewarding. Children often need more social development support than we realise. Here are some of my top tips:
Model Social Interactions: Demonstrate positive social behaviour through everyday activities like making phone calls, chatting with people in shops, or having tea with friends.
Utilise Social Media: Join local and wider area Facebook groups. Post about your child’s interests and invite other children to join in activities. For example, “This is X, they love doing XYZ and would love to meet other children.”
Engage with Various Groups: Homeschooling doesn't limit your child's social interactions to only other homeschoolers. It's beneficial for children to interact with diverse groups. Consider enrolling them in after-school clubs and activities.
Follow Their Interests: Pursue your child’s passions. If they love steam trains, plan a trip to a local museum and advertise the visit on your local Facebook group. This creates opportunities for your child to meet others with similar interests.
Organise Playdates: Arrange regular playdates. For instance, another parent and I rotate hosting playdates once a week. We alternate activities like cooking and games, blending structured play with free time.
Discuss Social Challenges: Be available to talk through tricky social situations. Model how to resolve conflicts or let things go.

Today we welcome our final Collage Ambassador helping us shape the way the product works for young people!
I am Fin
I am really passionate about game development, I love the creative side of gaming. I love keeping fit, it makes me feel good and balances out the time I spend gaming. I have a leopard gecko called Blue, he is awesome.
I enjoy going to Scouts with my mates, I like all the different activities.
The best thing about being homeschooled is the freedom to create my own timetable around all the things I love.
I find Collage simple and easy to upload my learning to. I love the fact that I can look back at all the learning and see how much progress I have made. I also like seeing all the different things I have been interested in.
I would say Collage is a great tool to create a portfolio, recently our local College told us that portfolios help them and employers see more about us than just an application form.

A recent Eurocamp break got me thinking about more travel, seeing how easy it is to live minimally and work remotely. So, what is world schooling and what are the perks?
World schooling is when families travel the globe, turning real-world experiences into learning opportunities. Forget the traditional classroom – world schoolers use the planet’s diverse cultures, histories, and environments to learn.
The benefits are huge. First, it's an immersive learning experience. Kids pick up languages naturally, understand geography by exploring new places, and learn history by visiting key sites. It makes learning exciting and memorable.
Second, it boosts cultural awareness and empathy. Kids meet people from all backgrounds, develop a broader perspective, and appreciate diversity. They learn to navigate different social norms and adapt, building resilience.
Third, it sparks curiosity and a love for learning. With no set curriculum, education evolves with the child's interests and the family's travels, making learning a continuous adventure.
Plus, it strengthens family bonds. Travelling together means sharing experiences and solving problems as a team, bringing families closer.
But world schooling isn't for everyone. Challenges like job flexibility, paying a mortgage, and family needs can make it tough. Still, for many, taking a gap year or travelling in smaller chunks seems doable. Where would you love to explore most?

Today we welcome Evie, our second-to-last Collage Ambassador helping us shape the way we capture learning.
My name is Evelina, I am passionate about art, especially painting with watercolours, I am teaching myself how to crochet, play the guitar and enjoy learning Spanish. I also love the ocean and love surfing, also learning how to kite surf. Our kitchen is normally messy as I like to bake which seems to create a lot of mess as well as delicious cookies! One of my favourite things about being home educated, is I have a lot of freedom in my week to choose what my day looks like. I really like Collage, I like how colourful it is and how easy it is to use and it’s a really helpful way to collect all of what I’ve done in one space.
