Penryn Women's Institute

Penryn Women's Institute A varied programme of talks and outings! Penryn Women’s Institute has formed an integral part of life in Penryn since it was founded in June 1929.

From Wednesday 2nd February 2022, Penryn WI will meet at the St Gluvias Community Hall, West Street, Penryn on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 2.00pm. Meetings are held twice a month on the first and third Wednesday at 2.00pm. Inaugurated by the Mayoress of the day, Mrs J.C. Annear, the wife of a prominent coal merchant whose business operated adjacent to Penryn Quay. At a largely a

ttended meeting Mrs Annear was elected President. Various Committees were appointed and the Mayoress entertained the gathering to a pasty supper. The Women’s Institute has been a great asset to the life of Penryn Town over the ensuing years, especially during times of crisis, i.e. during the war, the institution helped to welcome many evacuees from London helping the billeting in various homes with new families. Many of the evacuees remained after hostilities. The Welfare Hall (where Penryn WI met for well over 90 years) had to be vacated to be accommodated as a schoolroom for these children. Again following damaging air raids, W.I. members proved their worth in many ways. At that time membership amounted to between 70 and 80. Currently, enthusiastic and dedicated members' confidence is high and new members will be made most welcome. With an interesting programme of events being planned and a friendly and forward looking company of women, an enjoyable time is assured.

A few of us took advantage of the gorgeous weather (and the shade provided by the trees in Trelawny Park) to enjoy our annual picnic.
We’re all looking forward to Penryn Town Fair on Bank Holiday Saturday (29th) when we’ll be ‘manning’ our usual Tombola Stall just outside the old Chapel. We would love to see all our friends there - especially if they ‘have a go’!! 😁

Members enjoyed lunch at The Lemon Arms in Mylor earlier this week to celebrate Penryn WI’s 97th Birthday!
Our thoughts & prayers were with several absent friends.

We do not meet in the hall during August but get together for our Annual Picnic in Trelawny Park on the 12th and enjoy running our stall at Penryn Fair Day. Look out for us in our usual spot beside the old Chapel on Saturday 29th August.

In third place was our President, Val Bidgood, with 11 points. In second place was Margaret Whibley with 19 points but, with 31 points, Kathryn Hodge won the Cup!! Congratulations Kathryn!
