A meaningful highlight from the Global CFaH Fiji - Palawan learning exchange 🌱

This visit brought together partners from Western Philippines University, The University of the South Pacific and Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises & Development to strengthen collaboration around community-led agroecology, food and nutrition security, climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods and regional knowledge exchange.

Through Global CFaH, these partnerships continue to show how research, education and community action can work together to support more resilient food systems across the Pacific and small island settings.

Different islands, shared purpose. 🌱

In June, Global CFaH partners from Fiji and Palawan came together for a learning exchange hosted by Western Philippines University

The visit included the Palawan Dialogue on Sustainable Food Futures, a Fiji-Philippines Investigator Workshop, community field visits and the WPU Seedbank Groundbreaking Ceremony.

Across these activities, teams exchanged knowledge on community-based agroecology, food systems, indigenous knowledge, women’s empowerment, community resilience and sustainable food futures in small island contexts.

The exchange reflected one of Global CFaH’s core commitments: research is strongest when it is grounded in community knowledge, shared across contexts and translated into practical action.

From 20 - 27 June 2026, members of the Global CFaH team from The University of the South Pacific (USP) participated in a learning exchange visit to Palawan, Philippines, hosted by Western Philippines University (WPU). The week-long exchange brought together researchers, community partners and local stakeholders working to strengthen sustainable food systems, community-based agroecology, food security and healthier diets across small island settings.

What if the solutions for healthier food and cleaner environments were already growing around us?

In Palawan, Philippines, communities are showing how simple organic practices can support healthier families, reduce waste and protect the environment.

Through the Global CFaH Project, participants are using locally available resources such as banana leaves, dried leaves, kitchen scraps and eggshells as low-cost, eco-friendly tools for planting and natural fertiliser.

These small steps are helping communities reconnect with nature, reduce dependence on plastic and inorganic chemicals, and strengthen sustainable food production from the ground up.
