THE HERDWICK SCHOOL

THE HERDWICK SCHOOL Herdwick School is a traditional Lake District sheep farm. Our family have farmed in this area for hundreds of years. Mostly farming cattle and sheep.

We farm Herdwick sheep and we welcome visits from schools, groups and families (pre-booked) to come and learn more about this landscape, farming, food, wool and a range of other interesting things Our grandparents purchased this farm over 50 years ago. In recent years we have become aware that many people know surprisingly little about the farming that shapes the Lake District and the rest of Cumb

ria. Rather than whinge about that, we've decided to do something about it. Herdwick School is our attempt to help other people, particularly young people, to better understand this landscape, and its farming system, and to better understand the environmental, commercial and public benefits it creates. We have built a new sheep shed classroom and viewing platform so that schools and groups of visitors can come safely to the farm and experience the work that we do. We offer a safe, educational, inspiring and structured set of learning experiences that help other people to get close to what we do, experience it as much as possible, and leave with a deeper sense of understanding and connection to this landscape and the food and other products it produces.
