GIVEAWAY TIME!!

I’m giving away 90 minutes of free SEN support and advocacy to one parent or carer.
You can use the time for whatever would help most. Maybe you’ve got a meeting coming up, paperwork you’re stuck on, an EHCP you want to talk through, or you just need someone who understands the SEN system to help you figure out your next step.

You can also put the time towards one of my support packages if that suits you better.

I’ve been looking closely at the new DfE Speech, Language and Communication training for mainstream schools.

There is value in the strategies being promoted, but many are already part of the Universal Offer schools are expected to provide. My concern is the gap between universal inclusive practice and the specialist knowledge needed for children and young people with complex communication needs.

The training can be delivered in-house using the provided slides and guidance, without a requirement for specialist SLCN or AAC expertise. At the same time, the government’s Experts at Hand model is intended to bring specialist input into mainstream schools.

So what happens when that specialist input is limited, delayed or unavailable?

If mainstream schools are expected to support increasingly complex needs, the training and specialist support available to staff must develop alongside those expectations.

I’d be interested to hear the experiences of both parents and teachers. How do you feel about the new published training?

Autumn has always been my favourite season.
There’s something about the shift in light, the colder mornings and the landscape beginning to change that makes me want to slow down and notice things a little more.

This morning’s view from the garden felt very fitting for the equinox. Big skies, changing light, and that sense that one season is quietly giving way to another.

I think a lot about rhythm, regulation and transitions. We so often expect change to be smooth and immediate, when actually it can be gradual, messy and very individual.

Nature seems to understand that perfectly. So here’s to autumn, to softer light, muddy shoes, changing leaves, and giving ourselves a little more permission to move at our own pace🩵

A walk, a few pops of colour, and a reminder. The things that catch our attention in nature are often small. A flower at the edge of a path, a flash of colour in the green, something we could so easily walk past.

It made me think about children and young adults with SEN, and the details we can sometimes overlook.

The way we greet them.
The language we use.
Giving enough processing time.
Noticing sensory overwhelm before it becomes distress.
Remembering what helps them feel safe.
Keeping routines predictable where we can.
Following through on what we said.
Seeing the communication behind the behaviour.
Making space for their voice, even when it is expressed differently.

These things can look small from the outside but they are not small.
They can be the difference between feeling anxious and feeling safe.
Between feeling misunderstood and feeling known. Between simply being present and truly belonging.

For children and young adults with SEN, the small details often carry significant weight. Sometimes the things that seem smallest are the things that make the biggest difference 🩵

I’ve been having some really interesting conversations with SENCOs lately and one thing keeps coming through:

There is so much to hold in this role.

From adapting learning environments and understanding sensory needs, to creating relational safety and supporting parents through complex SEND processes, SENCOs are often navigating multiple layers at once.

Sometimes you don’t need another generic training session.

You need space to think, talk through what’s happening in your setting and work out practical next steps.

That’s exactly what my personalised SENCO support sessions are designed to offer.

With over 20 years’ SEN experience, I can help you unpick a challenge, look at what might be happening beneath the surface and find realistic, actionable ways forward for your young people, families and team.

When you’re in the middle of the EHCP process, it can feel like every email, every meeting and every decision carries enormous weight.

But you don’t have to figure it all out at once and you don’t have to carry it all on your own.

Sometimes the most valuable thing is having someone beside you who understands the system, can cut through the noise, and help you work out the next right step.

That’s exactly why I do what I do.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the EHCP process and need calm, practical guidance, I’m here to help.
