Getting too close to seals can have real consequences.
Disturbance can cause stress, exhaustion or injury, and during pupping season it can contribute to mothers abandoning their pups.

A seal changing its behaviour because of your presence is a sign to respond. Stop, reduce sound and move away slowly.

Giving seals space helps them rest and care for their young without unnecessary disturbance.

Our Cetaceans Campaign comes to an end today, but the guidance matters whenever you encounter dolphins, porpoises or whales around Pembrokeshire.

Before heading out, take a moment to check the Pembrokeshire Marine Code and keep the guidance handy.

Give cetaceans space, let them choose whether to approach or move away, and be ready to respond if their behaviour shows signs of disturbance.

Responsible wildlife watching helps everyone enjoy these encounters while allowing cetaceans to move, feed and behave naturally.

A seal lifting its head and looking at you might seem like curiosity, but it can be a sign that you’re too close.

If this happens, stop, reduce sound and move away slowly.

The distance at which seals become disturbed can vary, so watch their behaviour rather than relying on distance alone. Giving them more space early can prevent the situation from escalating.

You’re out on the water and dolphins, porpoises or whales suddenly appear near your vessel. What should you do?

If they have chosen to approach you, let them control the encounter. Slow to under 5 knots, maintain a steady course and avoid sudden changes in speed or direction.

Don’t turn towards them, chase them or try to keep them alongside your vessel. Always leave them an escape route so they can move away whenever they choose.

Keep watching their behaviour. If you notice signs of disturbance, leave the area calmly and give them more space.

Late summer is a great time to be out on Pembrokeshire’s coast, and you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins, porpoises or whales.

If you do, be aware of cetaceans from 100m away and keep at least 50m distance. If they choose to approach you, let them control the encounter.

Keep your course steady, avoid sudden changes in speed or direction and always leave them room to move away.

Giving wildlife space means you can enjoy the encounter while allowing cetaceans to continue their natural behaviour.

Exploring Pembrokeshire’s coast by kayak or paddleboard can bring you close to some incredible wildlife.

If you spot seals hauled out on a beach or rocks, resist the temptation to paddle closer for a better look. Be aware at 100m and keep at least 50m away, unless a seal approaches you.
