With exactly one month before this one, Rose, enters tweendom I’m wondering how similar/different her experience will be to other teens and tweens. She has a rare genetic condition which means she is fed directly into a port into her tummy (how will this impact the body image stuff when it hits?) she has autism (will this mean the teenage tantrums are worse than in other children?) she has dyspraxia and global delay (she still cannot dress herself or wipe her own bottom, how will she manage periods?) she has CVI and very little awareness of danger (will this make her even more vulnerable as she enters the risk taking and rebellious stages?)
I am highly experienced working with mainstream tweens and teens but I must admit I am daunted by the next ten years of this wonderful girls life!

What age do you think it’s ok to leave a child “Home Alone”? 👶 🏠
The law doesn’t comment on it but suggests it depends on the maturity, rather than the age, of the child.
I remember having lots of friends who would walk home from school 🔑 and stay home until parents came home from work at 5.... but there seems to be less trust in, and freedom for, our children these days!
So I risked it this week! I left my very sensible 9 year old at home for 1.5!hours as he didn’t want to come with me and his younger sisters. He had specific instructions not to do anything risky, including cooking. He was to play his xbox 🖥 and not use his head seat just the controller. He had to lock the door after I left and not open it to anyone. And then I called 📞 every 30min to check in.
The funny thing was that I KNEW he’d be fine. My main concern was how other people might judge me if they found out, isn’t that sad?! 😓

What do to do when you find these search terms in your tweens search history?

We were asked for some advice about this, our suggestion: Google the search to see what you're dealing with. Then an open and frank conversation about what your child might accidentally stumble upon.
Answer any questions that arise honestly. Unless you're not comfortable with them having that particular information at this stage. Take carel with the words used.

At the end of the day kids are curious, they will use the internet for s*x education. We need to be sure to let them know how to deal with inappropriate content: block, report, speak to an adult they trust.

Scary stuff from my 12 year old. Just found out she's had at least three follow requests from men.

I've seen her friends post wearing school uniform which has the name of the school written on jumpers and blazers.....

I've just listened to a really interesting talk by Tanya Byron. As parents we can't opt out of engaging with our kids' online world with the excuse of not understanding it all. We need to bridge the "digital divide."

So proud of my tween and his excellent school report. But, I can’t help thinking about the children that didn’t have greens and purples but yellows and reds. Instead of having the “I’m proud” conversation with their parents they will be feeling their self esteem chipping away and they will start to reject the education system where they’re “not good enough”. Is this really healthy for our children?! And we wonder why mental health problems are increasing or why society seems to be imploding!
Can it be coincidence that the little boy who pulled my tween to the floor by his hair and punched him in the temple yesterday doesn’t have one green box on his report? I’m furious that my boy was assaulted like this but also keep thinking about what his attacker must be feeling to behave like this. And as he gets older it will only get worse... 😢
The whole education system needs overhauling so that children’s targets are focused on their social skills and resilience and they are praised daily rather than assessed termly.
But, until that happens we have a responsibility as parents to teach them what really matters. And that includes empathising with the bully while challenging the injustice and damaging systems in the country (or world!)
