Major new exhibition of Simon Carter’s work!

This is one show you definitely need to get yourself to - it’s going to be a real treat.

We are lucky to have Simon as one of our guest tutors and even luckier that he devises new and exciting courses to share with YOU! Just 2 places left on his new course HIGH ON THE DOWNS starting on 19 September. Click on the link in our bio to head to our website and find out more.

REPOST FROM Firstsite :
Come take a walk 🌊 New exhibition Simon Carter: From the Landscape - from Sat 19 Sep.

Simon Carter has spent decades walking, drawing and painting the Essex coast and countryside. Now, he’s bringing that journey into our galleries - painting directly onto the walls and adding new ‘groyne’ structures to create a landscape you can walk through 🚶‍♀️

Choose your own route and see Simon’s work, the landscape, and Firstsite itself in a completely different way.

What’s been going on in your studio over the summer?

Emily had continued the “summer in the garden” theme and been making studies and then paintings of the old and gnarled apple tree in her garden.

Our gardens can offer so much inspiration for paintings. To find out how to make the most of your time in the garden head over to our website and check out our pre-recorded course “summer in the garden” - link in bio.

EMILY BALL – talking about Eve Stuart’s work and practice

“Eve is a talented final-year Costume Design student at Wimbledon College of Art, who has recently worked with Rambert and the Royal Court Theatre. Drawing has always been a vital and powerful tool within her design practice — but it is also an immediate and playful way of looking, exploring shape, silhouette, attitude and character.
“Eve drapes and constructs fabrics directly onto the body, exploring ways to enhance, transform and play with its shape. Her practice celebrates the movement and character that emerge through draping, stretching and adorning the body in fabric. There is a wonderful sense of play and discovery in the way she works, allowing the materials and the figure to interact and evolve.
“Dress Up & Draw (Friday 11 September) is a one-day workshop offering you the opportunity to experience Eve’s approach first-hand, as she shares her knowledge and explores how fabric, movement and the figure can be transformed into dramatic and characterful drawings.” ~ Emily

EMILY BALL – talking about Simon Carter’s work and practice

“Simon brings a lifetime of painting knowledge and experience to his work. Hugely respected in the art world, we are very lucky to welcome him to the Seawhite Studio as a visiting tutor.

“Watching Simon paint, he makes it look effortless. With an expressive and animated line, he can describe the movement of water or the edge where land meets sea — but the paint does so much more. Through the accumulation of changes, additions and marks, his paintings begin to take on the weight, air and toughness of the landscape he walks through and draws every day.

“His dedication to his work has enabled him to create palpable qualities of his experience and a physicality that gives new life to the subject. There is a real sense of the landscape being felt as much as seen — captured through the movement of the paint and the physicality of his mark-making.” ~ Emily

Simon is delivering a new landscape-based course at the studio in September )21st -24th) entitled High on the Downs. To find out more, head over to our website – link in bio.

EMILY BALL – talking about Joe Packer’s work and practice
“Joe’s paintings glow, and his playful-yet-complex compositions draw you into another world — a landscape of memory. As we look into them, our eyes move over and between leaf motifs, drawing us into secret, lit spaces. These invented and constructed landscapes are rich with colour, built up through layer upon layer of coloured glazes and overlapping motifs.
Joe handles paint with remarkable ease and assurance, moving effortlessly from delicate glazes to thick, expressive paint; pulling colours through one another, layering and sliding the paint to obscure or reveal glimpses beneath the surface.
Through his teaching, students have the opportunity to explore Joe’s approach to landscape painting and construct their own memory landscapes.” ~ Emily

Joe is back at the Seawhite Studio in early September (7-9), delivering his hugely informative and inspiring short course Constructing a Landscape Painting. To find out more and to book your place, head over to our website (link in bio)

What is it like to join Emily for A FISTFUL OF FOWERS pre-recorded course?

We’ve asked some of the artists who have downloaded Emily new flower-based course to give us their thoughts. Happily, they seem to be getting a lot out of Emily’s slow and revealing approach to drawing and painting flowers:

“I was delighted to start the new online course ‘A fistful of flowers’ and have been loving working my way slowly through the lessons. This is not my first course with Emily and each one reminds me how very much I love drawing and creating the black and white sketches and I’m still lingering in those first 5 lessons and taking my time exploring the various mediums as the vase of flowers slowly wilts and changes.

“I very much appreciate Emily talking her way through decisions, wonderings and musings as she works - once I’ve watched a particular lesson I leave it on in the background whilst I work - adds a sense of sharing my studio space with someone.” ~ Cathryn Nettles

Love this post from Simon Carter. The drawing itself is striking, but Simon’s comment about drawing helping him think really resonated with so much of what Emily says about making drawings of paintings as a way of moving forward.

How do Drawings help you in your practice?

REPOST FROM Simon Carter
