📚🎵 I know it's tempting to sing lots of different songs or reach for a new book every day, but sometimes slowing things down is exactly what your baby needs.

Reading the same story and singing the same nursery rhymes over and over gives babies the repetition they need to notice patterns, anticipate what comes next, make connections and build the foundations for language, memory and learning.

So if you're reading That's Not My... for the tenth time or singing Twinkle, Twinkle yet again, don't worry—you aren't "just" repeating yourself. Those familiar moments are helping your baby's developing brain while also creating warm, loving connections between you.

It's one of the many simple, research-informed ideas we explore together at Nurture Sense.

What do babies really need to learn?

Not expensive toys.

Not flashing lights.

Not cupboards full of gadgets.

Some of the most valuable things for your baby's development are actually really simple...

A song you sing together. Bubbles they can watch and try to catch. A book shared on your lap. A scarf to peek through. A loving adult who smiles, responds and enjoys being with them.

At Nurture Sense, we choose activities that support your baby's development, but just as importantly, help you enjoy that time together.

Often, it's the simplest moments that end up meaning the most.

I was thinking today how lucky I am to have so much variety in my week.

Some days I'm at Nurture Sense, meeting lovely parents and their babies, singing songs, splashing, exploring sensory play and chatting all things baby development.

The rest of the week I'm working with my lovely friend at Milestones Childminding where every day is different too. We spend our time playing, exploring outdoors, baking, reading stories, getting creative and helping little people learn about the world around them.

They're two very different jobs in some ways, but they're both built around the same thing - giving children the best start we can and making sure they feel safe, happy and loved while they learn.

Super lucky I get to do both 🙂

Mirroring at Nurture Sense 💛

This week we explored the idea of mirroring and also had lots of fun playing with baby-safe mirrors.

Despite the name, mirroring isn't actually about using mirrors! It's about responding to your baby's expressions, sounds and movements. When you copy their smile, facial expression, coo or gesture, you're letting them know they've been seen and heard. These little back-and-forth interactions help build connection, support communication and encourage social and emotional development.

Of course, babies also love looking at their reflections! Watching themselves move, smile and make faces is fascinating and can be a lovely way to encourage curiosity and interaction. If you're using mirrors at home, just make sure they're baby-safe mirrors, designed especially for little ones.

Sometimes the simplest interactions really are some of the most powerful. 💕

📚 Early Reading Week at Nurture Sense 📚

Today at Nurture Sense in Pant Memorial Hall we sang transport-themed songs, shared a big book together and spent some quiet time reading one-to-one with our babies.

It can sometimes feel a little strange reading to a baby who can't yet understand the story, but babies learn through connection, repetition and prediction – and books provide all three.

Research has shown that children who hear lots of language in their early years often go on to do better at school, so... read, read, read! Reading to your baby introduces the flow and rhythm of language as well as vocabulary that you may not use when chatting.

If you're looking for something to do, visit your local library. They're free, welcoming, and perfect for a hot day. Welshpool Library even has air conditioning! In Powys there are no late fees on children's books, and when you sign your child up for their first library card they'll receive a loyalty card – borrow 10 books and they'll receive a free book.

Why not dust off one of your favourite childhood stories and share it with your baby? It might become one of their favourites too. 📖💛
