Derry Pope Singing Teaching

Derry Pope Singing Teaching Derry teaches one to one singing, tailored to each person's needs as well as groups such as work and office choirs.

Derry also runs a session of Group Singing on Thursdays. Having qualified at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Derry uses exercises and techniques that understand and develop the natural sound of each person’s voice. So if you want to develop in classical, musical theatre, pop and rock or folk singing; Derry has experience to help you achieve your goal. A 60 minute lesson is £30 at Derry's

studio and includes tutoring on vocal technique and exercises, and working and developing a song and performance. Music is provided by live piano or recorded backing track. Whether it's heavily focused and demanding technique for professional singers, or for those that simply want to sing for fun, Derry works with signed and non-signed singers, musicians, actors, talented natural singers with no previous formal experience and complete beginners - some who start out with pitching problems or a lack of confidence in their abilities. Derry is passionate about working with anyone who is curious and excited about the singing voice, and sees lessons very much as a 'partnership'. Derry creates a safe and relaxed environment - believing that to be the basis for the creative and technical work required for developing the singing voice. Lessons are very much about the individual - not just in terms of vocal considerations, but also in understanding each person’s specific needs, their own unique ways of learning and their aspirations. Some students, for instance, might want to switch from classical to contemporary singing, others may have found they can't sing high notes with the same ease that they used to, while others might struggle with the feeling of having two distinctly different types of voice - chest voice and head voice, with nothing in between
Using exercises that are specifically designed to subtly negotiate, strengthen or smooth any voice type – and with patience, practice and persistence, the results can be completely transforming. Derry wants students to really understand their own voice and to feel free enough to fully 'explore' it.

Hear ye dear friends and choir members!
While Voices Anon, Forte Choir, Glee Club UK Community Choirs, and The Silver Tones Choir are on our summer break, you can keep singing.

My friend Tabitha Beaven is running three Sing-a-Show sessions. Grease (28 July), Les Mis (4 Aug) and The Sound of Music (11 Aug). The sessions are open to all voices. A joyful singalong with the option to add your own harmonies, or pick up simple parts on a few songs, if you fancy it. Make it a choir friend date or invite someone who'd never normally sing with us - maybe they'll get the bug and join us in September!

Details and tickets here:

4 choirs, 3 concerts, 2 days, and 1 exhausted musical director!

This weekend saw Voices Anon perform at the Battle of the Choirs as part of the Maidenhead Festival on Saturday afternoon, with both The Silver Tones Choir and Forte Choir singing at The Big Concert in Reading in the evening, and Mill End Voices taking afternoon tea on Sunday at Missenden. It has been a fantastic weekend of singing and socialising that has lifted the spirit and even raised over a thousand pounds for Action for Children.

I now need some time in a dark and quiet room!

This morning involved teaching the WI Berkshire Federation how to sing Jerusalem with the power and panache it deserves, and they delivered. Plus, afterwards I had so much tea, cake, and chat, it hardly feels like work at all!
