Things were heating up as normal at the fireground this week 🔥

A new array of delegates embarked on their STCW Basic Safety Training; a week-long course that prepares them for life at sea.

Our instructor, Neil, took them through the training step by step before they each had the opportunity to tackle an active blaze.

A question came up during our recent EV Battery Fires webinar: has Stream Marine actually recreated a battery fire at the training site? The answer is yes 🔥

We have set off personal devices like laptops and battery banks and worked through them with Lith-X extinguishers alongside a firefighter and the manufacturer developing that equipment. Right now the site has a car set up as a mock station, so crew and anyone taking the training can get up close to a vehicle fire and gain real hands-on experience of approaching it and working out how to bring it under control safely.

How many lithium-ion batteries are on a cruise ship at any one time?

More than you'd think. Every cabin has phones, laptops, vapes and power banks charging away, plus the occasional folding e-bike or mobility scooter. Across a full deck, that's thousands of individual cells.

That matters because a battery fire behaves nothing like the fires evacuation plans were built around. Thermal runaway burns hotter, produces toxic smoke quickly and can reignite well after it appears to be out, exactly where passengers need clear escape routes.

Many operators are already taking action, with some passenger vessels now asking for e-scooters and similar devices to be stored in fireproof containers. The next step is making sure crews understand the risk as well as the equipment does. There's a point on every BOSIET course where the training gets real, usually around the HUET and emergency breathing drills. It's the part delegates worry about most, and it's exactly where good instruction counts.

This lovely review from Janardhan sums up what we're aiming for. Nicole explained each exercise clearly, made sure everyone understood the safety procedures before getting in the water, and stayed patient and encouraging the whole way through. Our pool support staff got a well-earned mention too, for keeping a close eye on everyone in the water at every stage.

More electric vehicles are being carried by sea every year, and a battery fire on a vehicle deck behaves nothing like the fires most crews are trained to fight.

This course gives maritime personnel the understanding they need to recognise, assess and respond to battery-related incidents safely. It covers lithium-ion technology, thermal runaway, the warning signs of battery failure and the particular challenges EV fires present onboard, drawing on current industry guidance and the lessons learned from significant real-world incidents. It also looks at the smaller devices that come aboard every day, from personal electronics to e-bikes and e-scooters. Practical elements cover safe approach techniques, suppression methods, tactical decision-making and post-fire management, including contamination control and decontamination.

Aimed at seafarers, company representatives, port personnel and anyone involved in handling or overseeing electric vehicles and lithium-ion cargoes.
