StudySculpture Workshops Since 2005. Summer Sculpture Workshops in rural mid Wales.Metal, Clay and Stone.Simon & Anna Cooley Most are suitable for complete beginners.

Our workshops have been formed with the aim of providing a level of tuition in the arts which respects the fundamental skills of looking, seeing and making. The courses we offer have, at their roots, skills which are traditional yet always contemporary.

The last 3 days of our 5 day course had Greg sitting for us. And a great model he was too! We’ll have lots of heads to fire this year, everyone wanted to keep theirs.

We’re running 2 stage 2 courses in 2026; the next one is in September. Make sure you join. Our email list via the website if you want to know about our courses in 2027.

Yesterday was the first of our 5-day Sculpting the Head (stage 2) course.

On day 1 everyone makes a quick head of one model, and on day 2 there’s another quick head of a different model. On days 3-5 there will be a more in-depth study of a third model. It’s quite intense!

Finally we have a short dry window in the weather to transport two of our students’ raw clay heads from the house to the kiln. They’ve been drying in the house for months since hollowing them out last year, but it’s been raining ever since (yes, actually!) so they’re in now for a long slow 2-day firing, right up to the top temperature of 1200°c. 🔥 🔥 🔥 🤞🏻🤞🏻

The final head of Tim by Lesley. Hollowed and put back together, and now drying out for firing in the New Year. It’s been a great team effort between .sculptor and .ceramics, and all these heads are a great credit to their makers workshops.
