During the school's Environment Week this summer, a number of classes conducted surveys and research examining local environmental policies and practice and then planned and carried out class campaigns with the aim of affecting real change.
Some groups chose the Devon School as the object of their enquiry - designing and completing a green audit to examine the school's green credentials. They interviewed staff and students to help find ways the school could improve and produced a campaign highlighting problems and demanded attention and action via a petition (signed by over 300 students, groups leaders and Devon School staff), letters and emails to the school Directors and even some direct action in the form of a strike. The quality and energy of the students' work was extremely impressive and a clear signal that teenagers across the world are not going to tolerate the lack of action they see in the older generation in positions of power at every level.
The photo here shows a small sample of the students' research and campaign work. The school Principal, Directors and managers all remarked on the visibility and effectiveness of the campaign and made commitments to review school practice on some of the points raised in the green audit.

We have had reports of a student strike at the school this morning. Some students refused to return to class until their questions were answered about aspects of the school's environmental policies and practice.
