On Roald Dahl Day, Devon School brought the author's literary magic to life as students crafted a gallery of mean and disgusting characters. Our Year 11 pupils took this challenge to a sophisticated new level, applying a range of advanced language techniques to design characters who appeared entirely ordinary on the outside, but revealed a hidden, sinister evil upon closer inspection. To complete the celebration, everyone picked up their pens and illustrated their creations in the instantly recognisable style of Quentin Blake.

Each term, students at Devon School take part in a cultural day designed to broaden their understanding of the world and celebrate diversity. This term, our focus was Australia, where students explored Australian culture through a range of engaging activities. This term, our students immersed themselves in Australian culture during our termly cultural celebration day. They explored traditional Indigenous Australian art techniques, creating their own vibrant paintings inspired by ancient storytelling methods. Students also learned to play the didgeridoo, discovering the cultural significance of this iconic instrument. In a fun nod to popular culture, they even participated in a bush tucker taste-testing challenge, sampling insects to get a flavour of the 'I'm a Celebrity' experience! The day was rounded off with a classic Australian barbecue – complete with shrimps on the barbie, naturally. Students enthusiastically embraced every activity, gaining hands-on experience of Australian traditions, creativity, and culinary adventures whilst broadening their cultural understanding and appreciation.

🐝🐝Over the summer term, students at our Project Compass site have been actively involved in building new bee hives in preparation for the arrival of our colony. This initiative goes far beyond honey production – it's about teaching students stewardship, sustainability, and the vital role bees play in protecting healthy ecosystems. Through hands-on care of the hives, students witness first-hand how bees support biodiversity, pollinate our wildflower meadow, and contribute to a thriving natural environment. The apiary also opens up exciting enterprise opportunities. As our colonies develop, students will harvest products such as honey, beeswax, and potentially propolis to create items for sale through our community horsebox. This process will equip them with valuable business skills, including product design, marketing content creation, website development, and data analysis to inform decision-making. By bringing together conservation, entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and real-world learning, this project provides students with meaningful, practical experiences whilst making a positive contribution to both our site and the wider community.🐝🐝

🏳️‍🌈At Devon School, we promote an inclusive environment where we celebrate equality and diversity. As part of Pride month, we celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and learn more about the historic and ongoing challenges in the fight for acceptance and equality during our Pride Day. The day was a fantastic celebration of acceptance, inclusivity and unity and we ended the day with a colour run turning staff and students into walking rainbows. 🏳️‍🌈

We have recently welcomed 5 kid pygmy goats to our Project Compass site. Project Compass is our vocational centre where students are involved in both agriculture and horticulture projects as part of our Projects, Technology and Development curriculum.

The Duke of Edinburgh students should be incredibly proud of completing the expedition section of their award, which involved canoeing down the beautiful River Dart and camping at Buckfastleigh. Throughout the expedition, they showed great determination, resilience, and teamwork, supporting one another every step of the way.

One of the highlights of the trip was the group successfully cooking their own spaghetti bolognese over the fire, demonstrating both independence and cooperation. The students also enjoyed some memorable moments along the way, including spotting a seal during their journey down the river and having an amusing encounter with a particularly grumpy goose while canoeing, which certainly kept everyone entertained.

The training team complimented the students on how exceptionally well they worked together, even commenting that their teamwork was of such a high standard that they would have been capable of completing and passing the Gold Award. Everyone at Devon School is extremely proud of their achievements, and we look forward to seeing the students complete the rest of their award and progress onto their Silver Award in September.

Our recent student excursion to Wildwood Devon’s Saxon Village offered an exceptional, hands-on journey into early medieval history. Stepping into the authentic wattle-and-daub settlement, students transitioned from classroom theory to practical archaeology. Interactive workshops allowed them to experience historical metalwork at the forge, operate a traditional Saxon pole lathe, and craft bespoke jewellery. The historical immersion concluded with a culinary workshop, where students baked bread over an open-hearth fire.
The educational experience continued in the wildlife conservation park. Students observed native apex predators, including European wolves, brown bears, and Eurasian lynx, deepening their ecological understanding.
The day concluded with high-energy outdoor recreation. Students developed teamwork and spatial awareness navigating the challenging Beech Hedge Maze and testing their confidence on the thrilling Tree-Top Drop Slide. This memorable trip perfectly integrated rigorous historical inquiry, environmental science, and active physical literacy.

Three of our Year 11 students enjoyed a fabulous day at Harling’s Farm, Bere Alston. The students completed a Woodland Quiz Trail, learning about Biodiversity, which features in their GCSE Biology syllabus. They also enjoyed spending time with some of the farm animals.
