Contracted words can be tricky for some children.
It can be hard to work out which letters to take out and where to place the apostrophe.
I tend to find that, for children who struggle with this, it often starts to click when they’re given the opportunity to physically take out the letters and add the apostrophes in themselves.
This evening, a young man I’ve been working with did just that.
During the activity, he shared:
“I get it now.”
“I’ve noticed something. Like when I contract words with will, I take out the wi.”
“It makes sense now.”
And the result afterwards...
He could write some of them correctly on a whiteboard. 🙌
Check out the comments to see how he got on.
I’m a big believer that there is more than one way to learn something.
If one way isn’t working, try another. It may just click.
