PrimeAmy Tutoring

PrimeAmy Tutoring Helping children aged 7–11 build confidence, self-belief and enjoy learning through English and maths tuition.

One of my biggest passions in life is to help children to feel happier, more confident and positive about themselves and their educational abilities. I want your child to know that anything is possible and can be achieved when they believe in themselves, when they keep growing and learning and they never give up!

The new Lancashire school year starts in just one week's time.

So, how can you help your child prepare for the new academic year?

No, it's not more times table practice.
No, it's not more reading or spelling.

My top tip:
Get them back into a routine.

If your bedtime routines are out of whack and you've been eating when you feel like it, you're probably not alone.

After six weeks of going more with the flow, now's the time to start getting back into a routine.

Routines help children feel settled because they know what to expect.

Getting into a routine now will help them get back into the swing of things at school.

How are we in the last full week of the summer holidays already? ☀️

Is it just me, or has it flown by?

Has that back-to-school feeling started to kick in yet? 🎒

Does your child find reading words with two or three syllables tricky?

Colour coding can be such a game changer.

Breaking a longer word into smaller, colour-coded parts can help a child actually see the different parts of the word, making it feel much less overwhelming to read.

I use colour coding with lots of the children I work with to help them visually break learning down into smaller, more manageable parts, including children with a dyslexia diagnosis who have told me themselves how much colour coding helps them.

Once a child is secure with reading the different parts and blending them together, you can gradually transition back to seeing the whole word in one colour.

Sometimes, changing how something is presented can make all the difference.

“I’m glad to be back!”

Tonight felt like a normal night of tuition during term time, with sessions running back-to-back again.

Children were learning while having fun, with big smiles on their faces.

At the end of the session, one child I’ve worked with for some time now said,

“I’m glad to be back!”

It’s one of the biggest compliments I could be given. ❤️

There’s always a way to learn something.
It’s a tutor’s job to help a child find the way.

Behind the scenes, I've been busy planning new, fun, hands-on maths and English activities ready for the new school year.

A lot of the children I work with really enjoy this kind of learning. They learn best when they can move things, touch things, play games and physically get involved in what they're doing.

Of course, that won't work for every child – because every child has a way of learning that works best for them.

That's why having lots of different resources and ways to learn is so important.

I've also had a delivery of some new bits and bobs! 😍

I can't wait to put them to good use.

This afternoon I had my first session with a new child.

It was relaxed, calm and they had choices.

Choices in how they wanted to learn about place value and addition.

What I discovered from their choices was that they are a tactile, hands-on learner who likes to manipulate and move numbers physically, using wooden numbers or dice, rather than writing them down on paper or a whiteboard.

I also discovered that adding game-like activities and challenges really makes them engage.

They never once wrote anything down themselves, and yet they were learning.

Every child has a way of learning that works best for them.

Are the summer holidays too long, not long enough, or just right for your child?
