The last few weeks have been about keeping cool, lots of water play, ice play, oobleck, scooping, mark making, using tongs, spraying, watering, making footprints, handprints, washing, brushing, cleaning, measuring … Lots of great vocabulary, discussions, learning new skills and words and lots of great conversation between the children covering lots of the key areas of the EYFS. We’ve also been making little trays of water for the birds, hedgehogs and bees and scattering them along the flowerbeds too.

So 4 of our caterpillars successfully made cocoons. We had one rogue caterpillar my older children called the “very angry caterpillar” or “killer pillar” as it seemed to be the smallest one but wiggle around and knock the other cocoons from the lid of the the cup. We carefully moved them with a spoon clearing the frass and the silk web and put them in the net, near to the sides so they could crawl up the net and spread their wings. Unfortunately, angry caterpillar didn’t make it, however if we hadn’t moved the other cocoons we could have lost all our butterflies as they hatched the following day.

In a week our caterpillars have grown massively, turning into the “big fat caterpillars” before they build their cocoons. We made more caterpillars using sponges for bigger prints to show how much our caterpillars have grown. 🐛 🦋

This week has been all about 🐛. The children were really excited to open up our delivery of caterpillars from Insect Lore We’ve been reading the very hungry caterpillars, counting what he’s been eating, talking about why he might have stomach ache after all that unhealthy food, and the life cycle of a butterfly. Whilst we study each stage and watch our own caterpillars grow we’ve been busy making our own caterpillars and pictures.

… we watched a programme about how honey is made and tried some local honeycomb, (only very tiny pieces with it being waxy). We looked at the shapes in the honeycomb, the colour, how it felt sticky. We made our own pictures of bees collecting honey using lots of pretty colours we recognised from the garden. We also threw some bee bombs in the flower beds and the children took some home for their own gardens, it’ll be interesting to see what flowers come up over the coming months and next year and where they’ll actually be!! 🤔

🐝 The children have been fascinated by all the bees that love the nepeta, lavender and especially the cerinthe by the steps to the front door and there’s a lot of it, resulting in a lot of different types of busy bees to spot . We stood and watched them busily drinking nectar and building their yellow pollen baskets. We noticed some had longer “noses” than others, some were fluffy, and fuzzy and others were long and thin. We also spotted a ladybird sitting in the sun 🐞 We counted as many bees as we could and then watched Hamza’s Lets go for a Walk which was all about bees and sang our busy busy bee song. We then made our own busy bees using paints, cards, bubble wrap, cotton wool and googly eyes. We know bees are our friends but we mustn’t try and touch them!! 🐝
