💬 What does community mean to you?

This year’s Black History Month theme, Honouring Our Communities, gives us an opportunity to recognise the people whose contributions strengthen the places where we live, learn and work.

Communities are shaped by people: the leaders, educators, creatives, families, colleagues, neighbours and role models who make a difference every day.

Throughout October, we’ll be celebrating those contributions and encouraging our students and colleagues to learn more about Black history, culture and experiences.

🖤 This October, we’re proud to celebrate Black History Month at Activate Learning.

The theme for Black History Month 2026 is Honouring Our Communities, recognising the Black people and communities whose contributions shape, support and sustain everyday life.

Throughout the month, we’ll be celebrating Black history, culture, achievements and voices, while sharing opportunities to learn, listen, read and discover more.

We’ve also brought together recommendations from our students and staff, including books, films, documentaries, podcasts, music and learning resources.

🏆 Celebrating apprenticeship success at Reading College and University Centre! 👏

On Tuesday evening, Activate Learning were delighted to welcome Hall & Woodhouse to Reading College and University Centre for a special awards event celebrating the achievements of their apprentices.

It was a fantastic evening recognising the hard work, skills and commitment of apprentices completing their training with Activate Apprenticeships with winning apprentices from Reading College taking centre stage. 🌟

All of the apprentices received a certificate in recognition of their achievements, while apprentice Paul won the MasterChef competition and Jonathan was named runner-up. 👏🏆

But our apprentices weren’t only being celebrated, they were also putting their skills into practice!

👨‍🍳 Apprentices helped prepare and serve the food for guests throughout the evening, showcasing the professional skills, confidence and experience they are developing through their training.

A huge congratulations to all of the award winners and everyone who helped make the evening such a success. 🎉

Anthony Woodhouse, Chairperson at Hall & Woodhouse, said: "We choose really carefully who we work with as it only really works if you share a common sense of purpose. When the purpose is there and the objectives are aligned, success is increased dramatically.

"What's fantastic is seeing the impact and growth in self confidence and the number of apprentices who are promoted from that. It's a real trigger for taking people forward.

"Sitting at the core of everything we do is being a great place to work and giving talented people the opportunity to fulfil their potential. There is nothing like investing in training to show that a role is valued and the individual is valued. You provide talented people with the support and the opportunity to grow and they feel proud to be part of the company."

Simon Rosam, Director of Delivery at Activate Learning, said: "This partnership has led to a very close relationship between Activate Learning and Hall & Woodhouse to develop a bespoke apprenticeship that meets the employers specific needs.

"This apprenticeship is one that is designed by Hall & Woodhouse and delivered by us alongside other colleges. Our apprentices have a bright future and are within an organisation that truly values and develops its people."

Partnerships like this demonstrate what apprenticeships can achieve when employers and education work closely together, giving people the opportunity to develop valuable skills while making an impact in the workplace.

🏆 Platinum experience for our landscaping apprentices!

Merrist Wood apprentices Ellis Thomas and Jett Benson had the fantastic opportunity to work alongside members of the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) to help build ‘Elevated Garden Living’ at the BBC Gardeners' World Live Autumn Fair.

After an intensive four-day build, the garden went on to win Platinum AND Best Showcase Garden! 🌿👏

It was a brilliant opportunity for Ellis and Jett to learn from experienced industry professionals, try new techniques and see first-hand what goes into creating an award-winning show garden.

This World Su***de Prevention Day (10 September), we’re supporting the global theme Changing the Narrative on Su***de and its call to action: Start the Conversation.

Talking about su***de can feel difficult, but open, compassionate conversations can help break down stigma and make it easier for someone to ask for support.

You don’t need to have all the answers. Checking in, listening without judgement and taking someone seriously can make a real difference.

At Activate Learning, our Student Support, Mental Health and Safeguarding teams are here for our students when they need us.
