When old toys become new again…
This summer, my children have rediscovered Bop It — remember that one?! 😂
Bop it! Twist it! Pull it!
It’s been sitting around for years, but suddenly it’s entertaining them all over again, and it got me thinking about something we see so often with children’s play…
The toy doesn’t necessarily change, the way they play with it does.
Think about a simple set of building blocks.
At 13 months, your toddler might love picking them up, banging them together, stacking one or two and, of course, knocking down the tower you’ve just carefully built! 😂
A little later, those same blocks might become a wall around the animals at the farm, a road or garage for their cars, or a house for their favourite character.
And as they get older? Suddenly they’re creating elaborate towers, castles and whole imaginary worlds.
The same toy.
A completely different stage of development. 💛
It’s one of the things I love about watching children grow — their play grows with them. Their imagination develops, their skills change and they find completely new possibilities in something they thought they already knew.
So, while we’ve all had a little more time at home over the summer holidays…
Has your child rediscovered an old toy?
Or is there one toy in your house that they’ve played with completely differently as they’ve grown?
I’d LOVE to hear yours in the comments.
