#onthisday in 1974, Muhammad Ali became the heavyweight boxing champion of the world when he defeated George Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle.

After Muhammad Ali refused to comply with the military draft during the Vietnam War, he was stripped of his title and barred from the sport. The decision would eventually be overturned, and upon his return to boxing in 1971, Ali faced off against then-heavyweight champion Joe Frazier in the famous Fight of the Century. After 15 grueling rounds, Frazier was named the victor by unanimous decision. 22 months later, however, Frazier would lose his title to “Big” George Foreman in a humiliating defeat that saw the defending champion get knocked down 6 times in 2 rounds before the fight was stopped. Ali meanwhile had split two fights with Ken Norton, and redeemed himself against Frazier in a rematch, but the mixed results had created a public perception that Ali’s career was waning.

Nevertheless, the Rumble in the Jungle was arranged for Ali to face Foreman by none other than controversial boxing promoter Don King, and boasted a $5 million purse for the winner–an astronomical figure for the time. The Rumble in the Jungle took place on October 30, 1974, in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). The heavily favored Foreman was caught off guard when Ali was the aggressor from the opening bell, and throughout the fight, Ali employed a unique strategy known as the “rope-a-dope,” leaning against the ropes to conserve energy and allowing Foreman to punch himself out. Ali weathered Foreman’s barrage of monstrous blows, and by the eighth round, Foreman was visibly gassed. Seeing his opportunity, Ali unleashed a series of punches that knocked Foreman out, and reclaimed the heavyweight title in one of the most legendary boxing matches of all time.
