Evie Chappell, Co-Captain, (2024, Biochemistry) shares: “After a nervous first half ending 0-0, Teddy came out the break scoring 2 quick goals. The final whistle went, Teddy won 2-0 and became back-to-back Cuppers hockey champions. We will be back for the triple in 2027!”

Congratulations to Dr Steve Smith, Senior Research Fellow at St Edmund Hall and Arnell Associate Professor of Greenhouse Gas Removal at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, who has been appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to Climate Science.
He is Executive Director Oxford Net Zero and CO2RE – the Greenhous Gas Removal Hub: two programmes both focussed on stabilising the climate both rapidly and sustainably. He joined the Smith School from the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) where he co-led the Climate Science Team and played a role in the legislation of the UK’s net zero target. Before that he was Head of Science at the Committee on Climate Change.
Dr Smith comments: “I am grateful and surprised to find myself in such distinguished company. While many receive an honour for extraordinary achievements, I feel I have simply been doing my job, and it is a privilege to have such an engaging and fulfilling one. Particular thanks to my brilliant colleagues past and present who have made my work possible.”

St Edmund Hall student Frances Hand (2022, DPhil Law) has been selected as a BBC and AHRC New Generation Thinker 2026. The scheme recognises five of the UK's most promising early-career academics, chosen by BBC Radio 4 and the UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Frances will work with Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4, sharing her research on how to make childbirth safer for women in the UK.
She comments: “Whilst my ‘home’ will be Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4, New Generation Thinkers work across the whole of BBC Radio 4, so you might also hear me on programmes such as Free Thinking and The Essay.”
This is a tremendous achievement for Frances, and Teddy Hall wishes her every success as she brings her important research to a wider audience.
