Here's the abstract for the talk on Tuesday. Prof. Boyle well be speaking on 'From Culture to Cultures'. 8.30pm, T.S. Eliot.

"When did the modern use of the term 'culture' to denote a 'complex whole' of human practices arise? The usage is relatively modern, and the answers given by British historians of anthropology (and by Raymond Williams) are unsatisfactory. This paper looks in detail at nineteenth-century developments and draws some conclusions about the ideology concealed within this seemingly innocuous word."

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Baroness James of Holland Park. The celebrated crime writer gave a fantastic paper to the Club last year, which, like her work, will live on in the hearts of many.
