🤖 How are students really using digital technologies like AI, and why does it matter for teachers?

In the first episode of our Talking ELT series on Digital Pedagogy, we explore why it's important for educators to understand not just how students are using these tools, but why they're turning to them.

Students are using AI to unpack complex topics, organise their thinking, and express their ideas more clearly. Many see it as a tool to strengthen their learning, build confidence, and develop their academic voice. ✍️✨

The findings challenge a common misconception: students aren't simply using tools to bypass learning. They're using it to support their goals and communicate their understanding more effectively. 🌟

How can teachers better understand the motivations behind students' use of AI? Share your thoughts in the comments. 💬

Some students don’t show confusion by saying, “I don’t understand.”
Instead, they try to protect themselves from getting something wrong.

You might notice students:

* copying classmates before starting
* waiting for others to answer first
* avoiding speaking activities
* saying “I don’t know” immediately

These behaviours are often interpreted as disengagement or lack of effort.
But sometimes they can be signs of uncertainty, low confidence, or fear of embarrassment.

The goal isn’t to pressure students into participation.
It’s to create classrooms where mistakes feel safe enough to make.

What signs do you notice when a student is masking confusion?

Motivation isn’t always visible.

Sometimes learners are not lacking ambition or potential - they’re simply overwhelmed by pressure, deadlines, expectations, and the constant need to perform.

As educators, supporting motivation may also mean helping students feel supported in the present, not only prepared for the future.

What helps your learners stay motivated?

Trailers are such an underrated speaking tool.
They are short, emotional, visual, and packed with language.
Perfect for predictions, audience discussions, and mini pitches.
A tiny clip can spark a whole lesson 🌿

☁️🤝 How do we build trust with parents?

In Episode 4 of Talking ELT Season 15, we discuss the importance of being honest with parents about what happens in the classroom - even when that means saying, "Yes, we're going to play." 🎲✨
Purposeful play helps children develop language, communication, and confidence, while supporting multilingual learning in meaningful ways. 🌟

How do you help parents understand the learning behind play? Let us know in the comments. 💬

“You’re so smart” can feel heavy.
“You worked really hard on that” can feel empowering.
The way we praise shapes the way learners see themselves.
Which praise phrase do you use most?

AI can speed things up, but it can’t know your learners the way you do.
Use it like an assistant: idea‑generation, warmers, task tweaks.
Then bring the human judgment that makes your lessons yours.
That’s the real balance 🌿
