I canโ€™t explain how little I knew about sign language before meeting Richard.
I have always watched the small screen at the bottom of the TV when sports / politics or news is on and been amazed at how fast the peoples hands move.
So have you right ? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ˜œ amazing everytime !

Watching and seeing the intense concentration of the children during our weekly lessons has been incredible. They are so super smart at remembering the signs.
I have seen the HUMONGOUS benefits of learning to sign, as well as memory skills and testing their higher abstract and creative thinking. ๐Ÿ’ญ

Shrove meaning : โ€œThe word shrove is a form of the English word shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one's sins by way of Confession and doing penance. Thus Shrove Tuesday was named after the custom of Christians to be "shriven" before the start of Lent.โ€

Chocolate egg? Dinosaur egg? This has got all the children talking, thinking and wondering โ€ฆ ๐Ÿค”

We are going to be introducing the curiousity cube approach this week ๐Ÿ’š
This is a new concept for Roots, the idea is to change the contents possibly weekly as well as by the end of the week sharing and linking up the contents with visuals, books and a chat to extend learning and ideas.
The purpose of the cube is to encourage natural curiousity about a focused object, spark interest, child lead, communication, developing ability to ask questions, sharing experiences and promoting learning about something they have possibly not seen before !
Objects will be random at times ๐Ÿ˜ !
Please if you have any ideas do share!
It's going to be fun ๐Ÿคฉ
Keep an eye out for what is in this weeks cube ๐Ÿ‘€

The how toโ€ฆ guide ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ…

The children are fascinated this morning by the workmen who are cutting the hedge. One of them come over to explain what it is they are doing and what happens with all the leaves and branches that have been cut. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸThey were told that they are broken down in the green machine and blown out the top so that hedgehog and mice can use them to make their homes!!! ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ๐Ÿฆ”๐Ÿญ๐Ÿ’›

Something just a little bit naughty to snack on while you watch your favourite Christmas movie with the family ๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽ„ Which one do you watch EVERY year?
I am a sucker for Home Alone and Elf ๐Ÿ˜†

You will need:
โญ๏ธ Candy canes
โญ๏ธ Chocolate chips (suitable for melting)
โญ๏ธ White chocolate chips (suitable for melting)
โญ๏ธ Assorted toppings such as sprinkles or coloured candies

Melt your chocolate chips and mix until smooth.

Dip the curved end of each candy cane in the melted chocolate, allow excess to drip off and place on waxed/baking paper.

Melt your white chocolate chips and mix until smooth.

Drizzle over the chocolate to create stripes.

Decorate with your desired toppings.

Let stand until set.

A festive keepsake to cherish and display every year ๐ŸŽ…

You will need:
โญ๏ธ1 1/4 cups of baking soda
โญ๏ธ3/4 cup of cornstarch
โญ๏ธ3/4 cup of water
โญ๏ธparchment or wax paper
โญ๏ธrolling pin or flat object such as a plate
โญ๏ธsmall paintbrush
โญ๏ธwhite glue

๐ŸŽ…To make the clay, simply place the ingredients in a pot and heat on medium while stirring constantly. Before long the mixture will begin to thicken and come together in a mass. You'll know it's done when it resembles whipped mashed potatoes. It begins to get too dry very quickly, so take it off of the heat as soon as you see that mashed-potato texture.

๐ŸŽ…Remove the clay from the pot and place it in a bowl covered with a damp cloth to cool. Ten to 15 minutes should be plenty.

๐ŸŽ…Now to make the handprint ornament! First, lay down the wax paper and create a circle of clay that is about 1 centimetre thick and large enough to fit your child's hand. You can do this using a rolling pin, but I like the natural edges that occur when a ball of clay is flattened with a flat object such as a plate.

๐ŸŽ…Next, help your child centre their hand on the clay circle and press it down firmly.

๐ŸŽ… Use a straw to create the two holes that will later be used for hanging the ornament โ€” just be sure to not put them too close to the edges! Then it's time to let your keepsake dry for a couple days.

๐ŸŽ…Once dry, brush the glue onto a section of the ornament, sprinkle on some glitter, shake off the excess, and continue the process until the whole ornament except the handprint is covered in glitter.

๐ŸŽ…It's not a necessary step, but when the keepsake is fully dry, you can spray it with a clear sealant. Doing so will ensure that the glitter lasts for years to come.

๐ŸŽ…Thread your ribbon through the holes and tie the ends together, and your creation is ready to be admired!

This recipe will make 2 or 3 handprint keepsakes, depending on the size of your little ones' hands of course.

Be sure to share a picture of your ornament with us!

You will need:
โœจ2 jumbo ice cream sticks
โœจred cardboard
โœจwhite cardboard
โœจbrown cardboard
โœจ1 white cupcake liner
โœจ1 small white pom pom
โœจ2 small red pom pom
โœจbrown pipe cleaners
โœจ4 googly eyes
โœจglue stick
โ€‹โœจglue gun

๐ŸŽ…Cut 1/3 off the top of your white cupcake liner

๐ŸŽ…Cut a triangle out of your red cardboard

๐ŸŽ…Glue your cupcake liner in the middle of your red triangle.

๐ŸŽ…Cut a small circle and a thin strip from your white cardboard paper. Cut the circle in half

๐ŸŽ…Glue on all the finishing features to your Santa: A white pom at the top of the hat, the white strip for the brim of the hat, googly eyes, the two half circles for a mustache and your small red pom for the nose

๐ŸŽ…Cover your jumbo craft stick half way down with glue and then attach your Santa to it. Let it dry completely before playing with it

๐ŸฆŒCut a triangle out of your brown cardboard. Also cut out two small ears

๐ŸฆŒGlue the ear onto the side of the reindeer face (triangle pointing down)

๐ŸฆŒCover your jumbo craft stick half way down with tacky glue and glue on your triangle with the point at the bottom

๐ŸฆŒUse your tacky glue to glue on your two googly eyes, and your red pom nose

๐ŸฆŒCut your brown pipe cleaner stem in half, then those two pieces in half again. Cut two of those sections in half one more time. You will end up with 6 pieces. Twist two of the small pieces around one of the bigger pieces one time and then point the ends upwards to make antlers. Do the same with the other pieces

๐ŸฆŒUse a generous amount of glue to glue your antlers to the back of your reindeer. Let your puppet dry completely before playing with it
