Ali Kazim: Suspended in Time opens Monday 7 February. Join us to explore the work of Ali Kazim, one of the most exciting artists working in Pakistan today. ⁠

This exhibition is informed by the time Ali Kazim spent in the Ashmolean. During a residency in 2019, Kazim spent days browsing through the Museum’s South Asian collection, examining several objects up close. His engagement with the material and visual traditions – for example, how a small clay sculpture or a fingerprint can connect us, directly and viscerally, to the people who originally made and used them – encourages us in turn to reflect on how the past informs and influences the present.⁠

Curated by Dr Mallica Kumbera Landrus, Keeper of the Department of Eastern Art and Senior Curator of Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Art, in collaboration with the artist, the exhibition will feature Ashmolean objects alongside paintings, sculptures and installations by Kazim. The exhibition coincides with the 75th anniversary of Pakistan’s creation.⁠

The first four weeks of seminars this term will focus on "Researching South Asia", looking specifically at Kashmir (week 1), Bureaucracy (week 2), Animals (week 3) and Climate Change (week 4).

Professor Suresh Canagarajah is the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English, Applied Linguistics, and Asian Studies at Pennsylvania State University. He teaches World Englishes, Multilingual Writing, and Postcolonial Studies in the departments of English and Applied Linguistics. Suresh comes from the Tamil-speaking northern region of Sri Lanka. He has taught before at the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, and the City University of New York. His recent publication Translingual Practice: Global Englishes and Cosmopolitan Relations (Routledge, 2013) won the best book award from the professional organizations American Association of Applied Linguistics, British Association of Applied Linguistics, and the Modern Language Association of America. He was formerly the editor of the TESOL Quarterly and President of the American Association of Applied Linguistics.

Academic research in the field of education has taken unconventional turns due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, scholars have not been able to conduct fieldwork 'on location'. What are the new areas of research that the pandemic has opened up in the context of South Asia? What are the new methodological approaches to the study of education arising from this situation? The panel of esteemed academics from Nepal, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh come together to discuss their experiences.
