Oriel College, University of Oxford Official Facebook account for Oriel College, University of Oxford. It is the fifth oldest of Oxford's colleges.

One of the many advantages of studying at the University of Oxford is the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a large international university whilst also being part of a smaller college community. Oriel is a friendly and attractive College in the centre of Oxford, founded in 1326 by King Edward II. The student body is made up of approximately 330 undergraduate and 270 graduate students studying a wide variety of courses in a broad range of subjects. They come from all kinds of schools, backgrounds and countries and all candidates for admission are considered on the basis of their own individual merits and potential. Oriel College employs over 100 academic staff in approximately 30 subjects, and 150 non-academic and support staff.

Challenge accepted 🤝

Oriel College DPhil student and Oxford University Men's Boat Club President Alex Sullivan has challenged Cambridge Men’s President Simon Hatcher to compete in the 2027 Boat Race.

A Boat Race tradition since 1829, it falls to the President of the losing crew from the previous year to challenge their opponent to a race.

"It is always fun to size up the competition at Cambridge before the start of the season," said Sullivan.

"A lot of us are friends from rowing elsewhere, so there is a good bit of friendly competition.

"We still have a lot of work to do so for now I am just focusing on getting faster each day.

"We have just under 200 days until the race, but I know from experience that the race sneaks up on you."

The 2027 edition of the Boat Race takes place on Sunday 11 April.

The Provost welcomed the Bavarian State Minister for Health Judith Gerlach and a delegation from Bavaria’s Health Ministry to Oriel College on Friday.

During the visit, Minister Gerlach met Professor Lynne Cox, George Moody Fellow, and Dr Markus Brill, Fellow in Computer Science.

Cox discussed healthy aging, clinical frailty and health interventions with Minister Gerlach, while Brill spoke about his research into algorithms for collective decision-making.

Pope Leo this morning met a delegation from Oriel College in a private audience at the Vatican.

The Pope received the delegation, led by the Oriel’s Provost Lord Mendoza, at the Apostolic Palace.

The private audience comes after the Pope recognised the former Oriel Fellow Saint John Henry Newman as a Doctor of the Church and co-patron of education in 2025.
