It is with much sadness that I write to report that our Hon' treasurer, Tim Fryer has died today. Tim, whose early years were shaped by life on a family farm, discovered his vocation in practical engineering after the loss of his father in 1946. Encouraged to pursue formal training, he entered Rycotewood College in 1951, where he thrived in welding, blacksmithing, and agricultural engineering, laying the foundations for a long and varied career. After completing his studies and National Service with REME in Germany, Tim worked first in agricultural engineering and later at his local garage during the transformative years of the new M1 motorway. In 1964 he joined the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering, contributing to pioneering work in machinery, structural design, environmental monitoring, and early computer controlled ventilation systems. Taking early retirement in 1987 allowed him to embrace his lifelong passion for sailing, a pursuit he continued with joy for more than three decades. Tim’s life was marked by quiet determination, craftsmanship, and a deep commitment to practical problem solving qualities first nurtured at Rycotewood and carried with him throughout a life well lived. Tim dedicated his time on supporting the running of the Rycotewood Association and being an active member of the committee.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. A true friend and he will be greatly missed.
