Though the 1962 opening of the College represented an important moment in our distinguished history, our roots stretch back to the 1860s. St Catherine's - or Catz as it is affectionately known - is known for its spirit of openness, friendliness and dynamis

Congratulations to Professor Kirsten Shepherd, Fellow at St Catherine’s College and Professor of English and Theatre Studies, on the publication of Ten-Minute Book Club: Deep Dives into Short Reads. 📚

Co-authored with Alexandra Paddock and Daniel Ibrahim Abdalla, the book celebrates the joy of reading through 90 carefully curated literary extracts that can each be enjoyed in around 10 minutes. Spanning more than a thousand years of writing, it’s designed to make great literature more accessible, whether you’re reading on your own or sharing the experience with others.

We were delighted to welcome members of the Dean Kitchin Circle back to College for their annual luncheon.

Following a drinks reception and lunch in our newly reopened Dining Hall, guests visited the University’s new Life and Mind Building, where they enjoyed fascinating talks from Professor Tommaso Pizzari and Professor Adrian Smith, along with stunning views across Oxford from the panoramic terrace.

The Dean Kitchin Circle brings together those who have chosen to remember St Catherine’s in their will. We are immensely grateful for their enduring generosity and commitment to the future of Catz.

Thank you to all our Dean Kitchin Circle members who joined us for such an enjoyable afternoon. We look forward to welcoming you back to Catz again next year.

A beautiful summer day in Oxford, with blue skies and the kind of warmth that makes Catz such a special place. ☀️

Yet, as we enjoy the lovely weather here, we’re mindful that this immense heat is bringing devastating fires and hardship to communities around the world. 🌍🔥

Thinking of everyone affected, and wishing you all safety. ❤️

A warm welcome to Professor Jonathan Bell, who joins St Catherine’s College this October as a Fellow following his appointment as Rhodes Professor of American History at the University of Oxford. 🎉

An internationally recognised historian of modern America, Jonathan’s research explores the politics, policies and social movements that have shaped the United States, with a particular focus on health policy, inequality and marginalised communities.

Speaking about his appointment, Jonathan said he is “honoured and excited” to join Oxford and described St Catz as “a very special place”. We can’t wait to welcome him to our College community this autumn.

From uncovering forgotten manuscripts to bringing lost voices back to the concert hall, St Catherine’s alumnus Dr Leo Geyer (DPhil 2026) is using music to preserve history and connect audiences with the past.

Fresh from completing his DPhil, Leo reflects on his remarkable journey - from reconstructing music written in Auschwitz to championing music as a powerful tool for remembrance and discovery.

🚣‍♂️ The 150th Anniversary Boat Club Appeal has launched! 🚣‍♀️

For 150 years, the Boat Club has been a place where generations of students have come together to compete, collaborate, and create lifelong friendships. Today, we’re celebrating that incredible legacy by investing in the future of rowing at College.

We’re delighted that the appeal is already off to a fantastic start. We have taken receipt of a new Men’s First VIII and we're grateful for a generous pledge towards to secure a new motorised launch. These early gifts demonstrate the passion and commitment of our community and will make a real difference to our crews.

But there is more to do.

The 150th Anniversary Boat Club Appeal will help us strengthen our facilities, support our athletes, and ensure future generations have the opportunity to experience the challenge, camaraderie, and pride that rowing brings.

150 years behind us. The next 150 ahead. Read more about the 150th Anniversary Boat Club Appeal and how you can contribute by following the link to our brochure:

We are delighted to share that research undertaken by our Visiting Fellow, Dr Andoni Cossio, has led to the discovery of a previously unpublished translation by J. R. R. Tolkien within the Bodleian Libraries' collections. 📚

The translation, Soul's Ward - Tolkien's rendering of the early Middle English text Sawles Warde offers valuable new insight into his work as a scholar of medieval language and literature. Discovered during archival research at the Bodleian Libraries, the manuscript has now been published in The Review of English Studies by Oxford University Press.

We warmly congratulate Andoni on this significant contribution.
