Welcome to St Catherine's - Oxford's youngest mixed (undergraduate and graduate) college - and one of its largest and most diverse communities. Though the 1962 opening of the College represented an important moment in our distinguished history, our roots stretch back to the 1860s. St Catherine's - or Catz as it is affectionately known - is known for its spirit of openness, friendliness and dynamism, and the satisfaction of intellectual curiosity. Despite advancing within Oxford University's ancient tradition, our atmosphere is a distinctly modern one. Our striking modernist College buildings and our beautiful grounds, designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, aid our distinctiveness.

John Goodenough Lecture 2026
 
St Catherine’s College, in collaboration with the ZERO Institute and the Oxford Department of Chemistry, is pleased to announce Professor Michael Grätzel as the speaker for the second annual John Goodenough Lecture, celebrating discovery and innovation in science and engineering.
 
New Frontiers in Solar Technology: From Molecular Photovoltaics to Perovskites and Beyond

Professor Grätzel will explore the development of pioneering photovoltaic technologies, from dye-sensitised solar cells — inspired by the principles of photosynthesis — to the emergence of perovskite solar cells, a promising area of next-generation photovoltaic research.
 
The lecture will trace the evolution of these technologies and consider their potential to transform the future of solar energy.
 
Registration is now open. As last year’s lecture was highly popular, in-person attendance may be limited. We therefore encourage those interested to register early.

On Thursday, 8th October, we’re returning to One Great George Street for another memorable evening with the Catz legal community.
 
We’d love to see you there. The annual event is open to anyone who read Law or Jurisprudence at Catz, as well as alumni working in the legal profession. It’s a chance to catch up with fellow Catz lawyers, meet current students from the Catz Law Society, and hear from Professors Andrew Dickinson (Fellow in Law and Senior Tutor) and Tom Adams (Fellow in Law).
 
We’ll also be taking the opportunity to thank, in person, those who have supported the Derek Davies Appeal, helping to secure the future of Law at Catz.

We’re so proud to celebrate Catz alumna Eleanor Mortimer, who graduated from Catz in 2011 with a degree in French and Spanish and has since gone on to become an award-winning documentary filmmaker.

Her latest film, How Deep Is Your Love, takes audiences into the extraordinary world of the deep sea, following marine biologists as they explore one of the most remote environments on Earth and the growing threat of deep-sea mining 🌊

The film itself was awarded the Prix Buffon at Pariscience 2025, adding to Eleanor’s impressive filmmaking career.

How Deep Is Your Love will be released in UK cinemas this October, with a special preview screening at Oxford’s Ultimate Picture Palace on 15 September 🎥

A huge congratulations to Eleanor on this fantastic achievement! 👏

Almost 50 years after first encountering a tiny red seaweed off the coast of Cornwall, St Catherine’s alumna Professor Christine Maggs has finally solved the mystery of its identity.

Christine studied Botany at St Catz, graduating in 1978, and went on to become a distinguished marine botanist. Her decades-long search has led to the formal identification of Ceramium ruenessianum — a previously undescribed species of seaweed. 🌿

We’re delighted to celebrate Professor Eleanor Stride OBE FREng HonFIET, Statutory Professor of Biomaterials at the University of Oxford and Fellow of St Catherine’s College, who recently joined BBC Radio 4’s Best Medicine for Series 3.
 
Professor Stride and her team are pioneering a new approach to drug delivery: microscopic bubbles carry powerful drugs through the bloodstream, before focused ultrasound is used to release them precisely where they are needed. 🎯
 
By targeting treatment directly to diseased tissue, this innovative technology could allow lower doses, greater effectiveness and fewer harmful side effects, with the potential to transform both patient care and the experience of treatment.
 
Professor Stride’s work was also featured in the pilot episode of Best Medicine in 2023, and she returned to the show to discuss why this could be the future of medicine.
