β οΈ We have recently been informed that the Health and Safety Executive NorthernIreland (HSENI) have carried out a visit to a BFPA member facility during which the requirement to implement guarding on hose swagingmachines was raised.
Despite the member presenting reasonable and practical arguments β specifically the challenges associated with:
β« Varying hose types,
β« Different fittings, and
β« The ability to operate swaging machines from both the front and rear,
HSENI have advised that failure to implement suitable guarding will result in issuing of a Prohibition Notice.
For clarity, a Prohibition Notice is a legal order requiring the immediate cessation of an activity where there is deemed to be a risk of serious personal injury. As a result, the member is now having to explore engineered solutions to comply with the requirement or risk enforcement action.
β‘BFPA ACTIONβ‘
β
Engaging with swaging machine manufacturers to understand potential technical solutions
β
Raising this matter with our HSE contacts in England to seek clarification and alignment on expectations.
β‘οΈ MEMBER INPUT
This is a potentially significant issue for many members operating hose assembly facilities. If you have:
β« Encountered similar challenges,
β« Implemented any guarding solutions
β« Or wish to provide feedback or support
Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
