Congratulations to St Hilda's Professor Dave Howey and his team from the University of Oxford and Bboxx, who were recognised in the Faraday Institution Community Awards 2026 as winners of the Battery Innovation Programme – Innovation Award.

The team has pioneered the use of large-scale real-world battery telemetry and advanced machine learning to improve battery lifetime, reliability and sustainability for off-grid energy users across Africa.

St Hilda's undergraduates Elizaveta Verzhbitskaya (Engineering, 2023) and Vivian Lui (Engineering, 2023) are part of the five-student team behind Ictus, a start-up developing a wearable device for low-cost epileptic seizure detection, which won the £10,000 top prize at StEP's 2026 Demo Day last month.

StEP is an eight-week educational accelerator run jointly by Oxford Edge and Oxford University Innovation, designed to introduce Oxford students to entrepreneurship and build the skills they need to start a venture of their own.

St Hilda's College is pleased to announce Laura Coates has been awarded the title of Full Professor in the University of Oxford’s 2026 Recognition of Distinction Scheme.

This comes alongside Professor Coates' appointment as Director of the Oxford Clinical Trials Research Unit (OCTRU).

About the appointment Professor Coates said, "my ambition is for OCTRU to be recognised internationally as a collaborative, academically ambitious clinical trials unit that delivers outstanding clinical trials."

At the weekend, during our Gaudy celebrations, two such women, journalist and author, Catherine Ostler (English, 1987) and author and classicist Daisy Dunn (Classics, 2005) were in conversation about writing and history.

This weekend we celebrated a wonderful Gaudy line-up with some fantastic speakers, including award winning director Philippa Lowthorpe (Classics, 1980) in conversation with Ruth Fuller-Sessions (Classics, 1986).

We had the opportunity to watch Philippa's 1994 documentary Three Salons at the Sea, a poignant and touching fly-on-the-wall doc set in Blackpool. You can find it on BBC iPlayer.

St Hilda's alumna Beth Eames (Engineering, 2019), has stitched her way through nine weeks of challenges on BBC One’s The Great British Sewing Bee and has made it all the way to the final!

Since leaving St Hilda’s, Beth has also completed a DPhil in Mechanical Engineering and recently started work as a mechanical engineering consultant in health tech. She says the Sewing Bee has been an unforgettable experience, teaching her plenty about sewing, television production, and staying steady under pressure.

We’ll be cheering her on in the final (tomorrow, Tuesday 15 September, at 8pm on BBC One)! 🎉
