How did our 2026 cohort reflect on the OPHI Summer School?

We were joined in Costa Rica by 49 participants from 29 countries and a wide range of backgrounds — development professionals, academics, government officials, and more.

They called the course a ‘transformative experience’, ‘a rigorous yet practical exploration of multidimensional poverty measurement’, and ‘a wonderful opportunity to deepen knowledge’.

Our 2027 course will be an Advanced Course on Multidimensional Poverty Measurement and Analysis, designed for MPI technicians interested in deepening their skills and knowledge. Find out more on our website.

The 2026 OPHI Summer School is complete!

Congratulations to our 2026 cohort, who joined us from 29 countries and a wide range range of backgrounds — development professionals, academics, government officials, and more. They’ve spent the last fortnight working hard in lectures, Stata labs, and working groups to grow their knowledge and skills in multidimensional poverty measurement and analysis.

As our Summer School academic directors, Ricardo Nogales and Monica Pinilla, said: ‘It’s always amazing to engage with an international community committed to advancing rigorous methods to measure poverty in all its forms and think of public policies to end it.’

Thank you to Universidad Latina de Costa Rica for hosting the Summer School at their beautiful campus in San José, and organising insightful sessions on the use of the Multidimensional Poverty Index in Costa Rica.

MPI Ambassador and former Vice President of Costa Rica Ana Helena Chacón Echeverría spoke to ‘Beyond Magazine’ about her experience leading multidimensional poverty reduction in Costa Rica. During her tenure, she was the driving force behind the development and policy use of the Costa Rica National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI).

Ana Helena spoke on the importance of building bridges across countries — highlighting her experiences at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) — as well across government areas, within a public-private alliance, and with the general public. ‘This kind of cooperation,’ she commented, ‘is what moves the needle in poverty reduction’.

Costa Rica launched its MPI in 2015 , a tool which helped to identify the most vulnerable and guide evidence-based policymaking. MPI data informed the national strategy for poverty reduction, helping to optimise budget allocation and programming. Multidimensional poverty fell by more than half — from 26% to 12% in 13 years.

Congratulations to the Sudan Central Bureau of Statistics on the release of the Sudan’s National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) — a detailed analysis of multidimensional poverty in the country as of 2023.

Poverty is not just about income alone. Sudan’s National MPI measures how people experience overlapping deprivations across fourteen indicators spanning health, education, living standards and employment.

The report finds that poverty was already widespread across Sudan before the outbreak of conflict, with 82.8% of the population living in multidimensional poverty. It also identifies clear priorities for recovery, social protection and long-term development.
