Good afternoon everybody,

My name is Shamsul and I’m from Malaysia.

When I was reading an English grammar book written by Michael Swan and Catherine Walter entitled Oxford English Grammar course, I could not find an answer for my problem.

Therefore, I have a few questions on English grammar to be shared and asked to all of you. I’m hoping that you can contribute of your ideas and knowledge by sharing your brilliant ones here.

If you look at the section 09 : nouns and pronouns on page 126 of the book then you found that –
COMMON FIXED EXPRESSIONS WITH AND ARE OFTEN TREATED LIKE SINGULAR NOUNS.

For example :

1. Toast and marmalade isn’t enough for breakfast, in my opinion.

My questions are stated below :

1. Do we choose a SINGULAR verb OR PLURAL one if there are combination between countable and uncountable nouns in a sentence?

For example :

i. Water (uncountable noun) and idea (countable noun) IS or ARE useful and valuable to the human beings.

Do we use IS or Are in this sentence?

As you can see that the form description above does not explain in details whether the common fixed expressions are countable or uncountable nouns.

2. Do we choose a SINGULAR verb OR PLURAL one if both of them are uncountable nouns?

For example :

ii. Water and intelligence ARE / IS uncountable nouns in English grammar.

Do we use IS or Are in this sentence?

3. We know that if both of those nouns are countable ones such as chair and table then we can form the sentence by applying the rule of singular subject takes for singular verb and plural subjects take for plural verb.

For example :

iii. Chairs and tables are known as countable nouns in English grammar.

I believe that we should not use IS here ( to apply common fixed expressions with and are often treated like singular nouns) as both of those nouns are countable

What are your ideas and answer for my questions above?

Thanks for your help.
Poem (Butterfly)
Oh little lovely butterfly
Look at me with sparkling eye
Crossing fields in swift cool breeze
Flying over beneath the trees
I can see you around me fly
Look at me with sparkling eye
Touching the flowers with a bliss
Soft petals of flowers give you a kiss
Where are you ? here am I
Look at me with sparkling eye
Fly like birds ascends descends
Children catch you in their hands
Who will tell me? where you die?
Look at me with sparkling eye
White, blue,yellow,black and brown
All your colors in French,Greek towns
Hussein forever loves you, never feel shy
Look at me with sparkling eye

Petition: Extend business rates relief to include every English language teaching school

OEC Family - we need your help!!!!! We have nearly 4k followers on facebook and we need help from every one of you!!

Please sign this petition of you can - it will really help us out - teachers, students, host families and staff. Also, pass it on to family and friends.

Many ELT schools are excluded from the business rates relief scheme for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses, despite providing educational holidays for 550,000 overseas visitors a year. Schools closed their doors as part of the national effort to keep people safe but now face financial ruin.
The Chancellor announced that all retail, hospitality and leisure businesses in England - those most impacted by Covid-19 - would benefit from a business rates holiday for the next 12 months. However, due to some unclear guidance from the Ministry of Communities, Housing & Local Government, many English language schools are being deemed as ineligible by local authorities. Without this relief, many schools will be lost along with the jobs that they support and other benefits they bring to the UK.

Please help support our English Language school by signing this petition: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/324465

Super easy and healthy banana bread for your quarantine sweet tooth 😋
If there had to be one quarantine baking trend, banana bread would definitely be it.
This recipe has no sugar added and only uses clean ingredients that you most likely already have in your pantry.
👩‍🍳You need :
🍌3 very ripe bananas.
🍌2 cups of oats.
🍌2 eggs.
🍌1 teaspoon of baking soda.
🍌optional (but makes all the difference) dark chocolate chips
👩‍🍳Mix or blend all ingredients until smooth and well combined.
👩‍🍳Poor into a lightly greased loaf pan.
👩‍🍳Bake in a pre-heated oven (180C) 350F for 30-40 min until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
👩‍🍳You can also add your favourite nut butter to the mix or spread it on the bread later.
Enjoy!

Let’s finish the week by celebrating one of England’s greatest poets and dramatists : William Shakespeare.
Did you know that if we take the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations as our guide, then Shakespeare produced approximately one-tenth of all the most quotable utterances written or spoken in English since its inception - a clearly remarkable proportion. 🕯📓
