DIAMM exists to make available high-quality images of Medieval and early Renaissance music manuscripts.

We do this through our website and also by publishing facsimiles.

Closing SOON: The ERC Starting Grant 'SCRIBEMUS - Scribes of Musical Cultures. Decoding early musical writing technologies in Latin Europe c. 900-1100' (PI Prof. Giovanni Varelli) aims to reconstruct and understand the phenomena underlying the first large-scale diffusion of neumatic notation in 10th- and 11th-century Europe, as well as to study the historical (political and ecclesiastical) dynamics that may have favoured its spreading.

The Research Fellow(s) will be affiliated to the Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage of the University of Pavia. Flexible working arrangements may be discussed with the PI. Please note that, while excellent written and spoken English is essential, advanced knowledge of Italian is not strictly required. (For Jobs B and C, basic Italian, as well as the Fellow’s availability to achieve proficiency would be desirable). International candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. [International candidates only: should you require more information and/or support with the application feel free to write [email protected]]

A. 1-year Research Fellowship in medieval ecclesiastical history (deadline 18 January 2024).

The Research Fellow will work on 1) the identification of political-ecclesiastical networks in 10th- and 11th- century Europe, particularly (but not exclusively) in the territories of modern-day northern Italy, southern France, and north-eastern Spain); 2) the identification of concrete evidence for the existence of such networks through surviving liturgical sources with or without musical notation (knowledge of Latin liturgy is desirable for the post); 3) the publication of an article in a journal (class-A) to be submitted by the completion of the Research Fellowship.

B. 1-year Research Fellowship in Latin Palaeography (deadline 15 February 2024).

The Research Fellowship will have as its main objectives: 1) the dating of manuscripts and fragments containing neumatic musical notation from the 10th and 11th centuries (in particular, but not exclusively, from early-medieval Italy) and/or the verification of the dating(s) drawn from available literature; 2) inserting relevant palaeographical and codicological data in the project's database; 3) the publication of an article in a journal (class A) to be submitted before the end of the Fellowship.

C. 1-year Research Fellowship in Digital Humanities for Musicology (deadline 15 February 2024).

The Research Fellowship will have the following objectives: 1) the creation of an online database of sources with musical notation from the 10th and 11th centuries; 2) the creation of the pilot version of a digital online platform for the study of medieval manuscript palimpsests; 3) the editing of digital images for the recovery of information from palimpsest manuscripts; 4) the publication of an article in a scientific journal (class A) to be delivered by the end of the Fellowship.

D. 1-year Research Fellowship in Musicology/Musical Palaeography (deadline 15 February 2024).

The specific objectives of the Research Fellowship are: 1) the study of the oldest evidence for music scripts and notations from northern Italy, especially, from the 10th century, with a particular focus on the river Po valley; 2) the identification of ecclesiastical networks that may have favoured the diffusion of those music scripts; 3) the publication of an article in a journal (class A) to be submitted before the end of the Research Fellowship. (Note that this is the only position on the project conceived with a specific focus on a geographical area in order to support collaborative research on the PI’s research interests; otherwise SCRIBEMUS will not deal exclusively with Italian notations.)

Posted by Myke C (not on the board, just with legacy access to the page): Amazing work coming soon from Julia Craig-McFeely, Magnus W, and DIAMM on the Sadler Partbooks and recently Margaret Bent, Andrew Wathey, and Julia on the newest Early English Church Music volume.

Please support DIAMM by citing it in any publications that use it (even if “I could’ve found it elsewhere” but you didn’t) or including it in grant proposals.

Apologies to those of you who are experiencing particular difficulties with image loading. This has been at least partly out of our control due to a problem with the servers, but we are trying to fix it. It does seem to be worse in some parts of the world than others. Thank you all for your patience while we try to sort it out.

AAAAAnd... the website is back up to speed.

DIAMM has been going slow for nearly two weeks now, but I'm afraid this is not our servers, it is the infrastructure hosting it, so at the moment there is nothing we can do, but we understand Compute Canada is on the case. Apologies for the continuing need for extreme patience while waiting for pages to load.
