What do you get when you bring an award-winning investigative journalist, a brilliant Shakespeare scholar and a roomful of Hertfordians together? 🫶

Last Friday, we welcomed Carole Cadwalladr to Hertford for our John Donne Annual Lecture and Dinner. In conversation with Professor Emma Smith, Carole took us behind the headlines and into the fascinating and thought-provoking world of investigative journalism 🔎

Afterwards, it was over to Hall for dinner, and the chance to carry on conversations well into the evening.

A huge thank you to Carole and Emma, and to everyone who joined us and made the evening such a success ❤️

A very warm Hertford welcome to our Visiting Fellows for 2026–27! 👋

We’re delighted to welcome Dr Laura Gilbert CBE as a Visiting Fellow. Laura is Senior Director of AI at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and has had a fascinating career spanning particle physics, AI, government, medical technology and more – as well as representing Great Britain seven times in Savate kickboxing!

We’re equally pleased that Anthony Geffen, the multi-award-winning producer and founder of Atlantic Studios, will continue as a Visiting Fellow for another year.

If you put all of Hertford Library’s books in a row, they would stretch for over a kilometre – roughly the same distance as walking from Hertford College Library to the reading room at Geoffrey Warnock House! 🤯📖
