October is and today we’re looking at the extraordinary Professor Merze Tate, who attended The Society of Oxford Home-Students (now St Anne’s College) from 1932 to 1935.

Professor Merze Tate’s life is full of firsts, breaking racial and gender barriers in pursuit of education.

Last week we bade a sad farewell to Dining Hall Manager Colin Yon, an indispensable presence at St Anne's for the past 24 years -- he is now heading back to his native St Helena for a well-deserved retirement. He will be hugely missed!

🚣 Women’s Rowing Centenary – warm-up race this Saturday

As you may know, next year marks the centenary of women’s rowing at Oxford. In advance of next year’s celebrations, a special warm-up race will take place this Saturday, 26 September, between an Oxford crew and Newnham College, Cambridge – who formed the first Cambridge women’s boat.

We’re delighted that the Oxford crew will include current St Anne’s rowers, alongside rowers from Somerville and St Hilda’s.

If you happen to be in or around Oxford this weekend, do come down to Christ Church Meadow and cheer them on! The race is due to begin at 12 noon, with spectators making their way through the Meadow towards Boathouse Island.

The event will include both a judged style race and a timed piece, echoing the early days of women’s rowing, and will be filmed as part of the centenary project.

It would be wonderful to see some St Anne’s faces on the banks! 💙🚣
