Read my new article in The Journal of the T. S. Eliot Society (UK). The article argues that it is potentially not possible to argue for a determinate meaning of The Waste Land as many critics have done over a century arguing for either Eliot’s personal Waste Land or one grounded in his famous ‘impersonal’ theory of poetry. Such a reading was possible using Lacanian theory of language - or indeed poetic language.

Quoting the article, Journal’s editor Professor Christopher Southgate wrote: ‘Adil Khan analyses the poem in Lacanian terms, insisting on the way “images and voices repeatedly fail to settle into determinate reference, forcing the reader to confront meaning as a function of relation rather than representation.” I found this perspective very persuasive in relation to The Waste Land.’
