We’re inviting organisations, researchers, and innovators to take part in our flagship public engagement festival - the Oxford Brookes Science Bazaar, taking place on Saturday 20 February 2027 at our Headington Campus.

Each year, the Science Bazaar welcomes over 10,000 visitors, including families, schools, and community groups, for a day of hands-on science, creativity, and discovery.

What makes a cinema more than just a place to watch films? 🎬

For Evan, a Master’s student in the School of Art, the answer lies in its community.

His research explores how the community around Oxford’s independent Ultimate Picture Palace (UPP) helps shape its identity. As a UPP volunteer himself, Evan is creating a documentary film that captures the stories, memories and experiences that make the cinema special — including the moments and conversations that might otherwise be lost.

Through filmmaking and oral histories, his project asks: how does a community help create the identity of an independent cinema?

And could the UPP’s experience offer inspiration for other independent cinemas and the communities around them?
